Wrong way Driver on southern state
I was on SSP yesterday and was approaching 44e. I am in the middle lane and I see a car in the left lane swerve to the median. I was thinking wow, hope they're ok. Because it was just sudden. As I'm driving I see a car in the left lane going the wrong way.
My knees literally buckled and my hands shook. I can't even believe I was able to dial 911. I just kept thinking about the documentary about aunt Diane going the wrong way....
This is around 4:15pm... Maybe a few minutes later.
The other driver was able to get control of their car and kept driving.
All night long I was thinking about the other vehicle. How their instinct was to pull into the grassy area and go to the left. Otherwise they might have hit me and/or the other 5 cars that were around.
Did anyone else hear if they got the person? And a huge thank you to the person who thought so quickly. May you always be blessed. I also hope no one was injured.

Re: Wrong way Driver on southern state
OMG this is my biggest fear!
And you always picture it happening late at night, when all the drunks are on the road, not in the afternoon.
This is happening more and more- they really need to come up with a better way to prevent assholes from getting on the road in the wrong direction. There has to be something.
Glad everyone is ok.

I KNOW!!!! I can't believe it was broad day light and wondered how they got to that side. There is cement and metal barricades. It all happened so fast.

Wrong way Driver on southern state
That is a huge fear of mine. Especially late at on a Saturday night. Especially after that aunt Diane thing. Horrifying.
I wish they had those spikes down on entrance and exit ramps. The ones that if you go over them in the wrong direction they blow out your tires.

I saw on an E Islip facebook group that someone posted it was an elderly woman and the police got her. That's all I know.

Thank you!
I saw she was an elderly woman too and told that to the 911 dispatcher that.

Wow, that is so scary. Glad you are ok. A friend's brother was killed by a wrong way driver on a major highway (out of state), so this has always been a huge fear of mine too. Glad to hear they caught the woman, and hopefully her license will be revoked.

Re: Wrong way Driver on southern state
There was a wrong way driver on Nicholls Road last night north of 347! My husband was driving in the left lane and we saw the headlights approaching so we slowed down and moved to the right and started beeping. The strange thing is that the car had the hazard lights on and they were driving as close to the grass as possible but they were still in the left lane. So, they must have known that they were driving the wrong way! After they drove past us, they were able to cross over at an opening to get to the correct side!

Honestly people should have to take a road test every 5 years after the age of 65 or so. There are so many elderly people on the road that should not be driving.

This times 100x I agree!
It's absurd that there is no check after age 17. Even doing a recheck on folks is important.
When our parents took drivers Ed, there were no seatbelts. Times and laws have changed.
Recheck people every 10/15 years at least with eye and written test!
