Re: Missing Elementary School for Vacation?
My parents never pulled me and sis for vacations. We just took them in the Summer. But I think its fine, in the lower grades. Once they hit 4th grade + I wouldnt feel comfortable pulling for vacations. Jmo

I am a fulltime working mother. Yes my husband works too. We WORK. Therefore our vacations are important to us.
We take a vacation one week every year. That vacation is set by me and depends on where we are going for the best price and time of year. This year it's Disney. Guess what. That means during the school year is the best time to go for price and crowds. She will miss a week of school.
If she can't handle missing a week of school we are doing something wrong as parents. Not the schools as educators but us as parents.
If She can't handle missing a week of school, I wouldn't let her miss a week of school. Thankfully that isn't an issue for us. She's going to miss during Halloween when frankly Elementary schools do diddly squat. OOh don't dress up, no candy but lets be real the kids are all hyped up. My only concern is this is the first year of testing for my kid. Its the only thing she can't miss. Otherwise, meh.
My SO and I work too, so do our children's other parents and we each have a custody order to abide by....and we only take vacations during school breaks, as do our children's other parents
Truthfully, I don't think its that big of a deal to make a long weekend into a trip, etc, but I won't pull my DS or my SO's son for a vacation. I guess we are wet sponges but school comes first in our house.
I am going to say that when we were working on our parenting agreement vacations were ONLY discussed during school breaks (I have one, my ex has one, we split the xmas week) no one brought up anything else. We also each get two weeks in the summer.

Re: Missing Elementary School for Vacation?
I don't think pulling your children from school for a family vacation has ANYTHING to do with the importance of enforcing their education. DH and I are pretty hard core about school for our kids ......I would pull them for the experience of a family vacation. Not everything in life has to be done by the book, by the rules, by other people expectations .......
We work hard, and we play hard. We want our kids to know there are rewards for hard work and dedication - I don't think missing a week of school gives them the idea that 'vacation is more important than school' .......
But then again, I seriously do not give one SECOND of a thought to what anyone's opinion of that is ....if someone else would or would not do it etc.
Do what is good for you, for your kids, for your life, for your bank account, for your family, for your sanity - and prepare yourself to blow off all of the comments that come w/ the decision you make.

I agree with all of the above and will add life is too short to worry about this stuff. I pulled my kids to go to Disney for the first time because I didn't want to deal with the crowds and the exorbitant cost. My mom came with us. She got sick shortly after and died so those family memories FAR outweigh missing school for a week. Family time is everything and IMO trumps having to play catch up on a week's worth of math.

Just because we prefer to go on vacation during the school year and pull our kids out does not mean we don't think school is important.

Missing Elementary School for Vacation?
My parents never pulled me and my sisters out of school. But i don't see anything wrong with it. Im pulling DD next year to go to disney. In NJ kids have off for a full week in November for a teachers state conference and we went to disney during that and it was extremly busy and no discounts never again.

I feel like its not really fair to the teacher to have to prepare work ahead of time or teach missed material. Like a pp said, illness, death in the family, emergency- yes absolutely. But so the parents can save a few hundred $$ on a vacation? I don't think that's right.
Isn't that kind of the deal when you have a kid? You can't always do what you want when you want to?
I rolled my eyes SO hard at this.
The "deal when you have a kid" imo is doing the best you can- doing what you can and giving what you can. Btw we don't save a couple hundred, we save thousands. Last year we took a trip for 2k total that would have been $4300 just a month earlier when school was out. How is it not fair to the teacher? Preparing missed work is just a part of the job whether a kid goes away for a few days or is ill. It just is what it is- a part of their work just like there are a zillion different parts to my work.

I take my son out not just because we save a lot of money, but also because we don't handle the heat very well so most summer vacations are out. And my son is not good with huge crowds. My parents took us out when we were young. It was the only time we ever saw our family in England. Having a kid means you do what is best for them. My son would never handle going to disney during a school break. is that fair to him? No....
And I tell the teacher ahead of time that we are going away. If they don't want to give any work, then fine. He has had no issues fallig behind because of our trips to disney. We went in October 2014, December 2015, and we are going again this year in November.
Traveling is a HUGE learnig experience for them. My pedi encourages us to travel whenever we can.

Re: Missing Elementary School for Vacation?
I have never done this yet but I absolutely would in the right situation. Take a really big step back from the situation. There are some families that would never ever go on vacations if it weren't for taking kids out of school. People whom work during holidays and school vacations, people whom can't afford to go away during these times, people who want to go before baby, surgery, family death.....ect.
In 20 years will your kids remember a family vacation or will they be living in a box because they missed a week of school in second grade? Sure, a PIA for teachers but this is par for the course. Every job has an opportunity for inconvenience for similar reasons. Picking up extra work because a coworker is on vacation, maternity leave, laid off....this is just life.

As a teacher, I believe learning doesn't only happen in school. Vacations, especially ones that allow children to experience different cultures/museums/etc, are learning experiences for children.

This I agree with. I just don't see Disney as a learning experience. Maybe Epcot?

Re: Missing Elementary School for Vacation?
I don't mind kids missing for family vacations ( I teach5th). I always have kids going to their native countries for weeks at a a time. I just wish, as a teacher, we had a floating week so I could save some money on vacations, too.

Missing Elementary School for Vacation?
I pull my daughter out once or twice a year. She's in elementary school and I don't think twice about it.
Many times we are going away with family out of state so one of us is always going to miss since the schedules aren't the same.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. My daughter never has a full class the first week.

Re: Missing Elementary School for Vacation?
My kids will miss a week of school every year for our annual trip to aruba, no question. We are also not teachers, and don't have to take vacations when schools are closed and its more crowded and expensive, so we will do our 1 week a year. I would love to do it 2 times a year but that would be a little too much!
