Re: Job Advice
I'd lean toward staying but would continue to interview for better options, my reason for staying is :
(1) the salary (6K is not a lot but its still a step back in your career), (2) your commute is double at the new job - what if your kid gets sick on that 1 day you have to be in the office and you need to be there ASAP? (3) no guarantee your new job will lead you to advancement opportunities (better salary or better title).
I guess I am risk-averse, but having had the unfortunate experience of jumping ship several times and having new jobs "not work out" for whatever reason, then I am no only out of a job but can't go back to the old one.

Re: Job Advice
I think if you are that miserable then you should try and make it work but I did want to add that one day less of childcare might not make a difference.
It depends on what kind of childcare you have.
The place we used (large chain center) had part time but only for 2 or 3 days a week.
So you would need a place where you pay on a daily basis.

Luckily, my parents are my childcare. We pay them minimally, just a little spending money, so I there's no real cost impact I would need to absorb there. We can make the difference work, I just hate the idea of taking a pay cut LOL But there are some very compelling trade offs, so I see it as a balance. I am 99% I am taking the new job, and I am not looking forward to discussing with HR on Monday

Being that you are currently pregnant, just make sure you document their agreement to provide you with maternity leave because there is a chance you will not qualify for FMLA.

Yes, I don't think the company has 50 employees, so I don't believe FMLA is going to be available. I told him I expect an employment offer letter that spells out exactly what we've discussed.

Even if there were 50 employees, you're not eligible for FMLA because you won't be working there for at least 1 year by the time you go on leave.
Is there opportunity for growth at the new job? How quickly will you be able to recoup the pay cut? I've been miserable at jobs and have taken pay cuts for a better quality of life. If you can swing the pay cut, I'd take it especially since you'd have an extra day at home with your kids.

I don't think that any employer would be willing to spell out in an offer letter the amount that you will be paid off the books though, since it's illegal to pay someone off the books.

If part of the new job pays cash than the 6k is less than 6k. The 6k from your current employer I assume gets taxed so maybe you are getting 75% of that...and depending on what the cash amount is that won't be taxed.

Do you work 5 days a week now? Will the new job be less hours? If so, I wouldn't even consider it a pay cut.
For me, its a no brainer and I would take the new job. Life is too short to spend so much of your time at a place that makes you miserable. Trust me, I know! In my personal experience, having two kids was a lot harder than I anticipated (in terms of juggling it all) so I will always choose the job that offers more flexibility. Good luck!

Definitely the new job. You will need the flexibility with the two kids and just the stress factor alone would be enough to give up 6000. In the long run its not that big of a loss to deal with what sounds like a nightmare of a boss now

I am only even entertaining this deal because the company is legit, the co-owner is my friend's husband, and I know they are on the up and up. He is getting X amount from the company for a salary, he is subsidizing the cash amount out of his own pocket to make it a better salary. And he will revisit the idea of going fully on the books, so there is that option as well after 1 year.

Thank you! I know when I wrote it down I was like, is this even a question? But sometimes asking people can give you a perspective you might not have seen. We are lucky with childcare, but it sucks having a job that is NOT flexible for working parents, any "perks" my current job offers (which are basically nil) can't compare to having a paid maternity and flexibility and less work hours. They told me eff off when I broke my nose playing for the company softball team (which there is a "gray area" legally but I thought they were going to do the right thing), they said they will discuss a paid maternity leave in February (when I am due in March!), and a whole slew of other nonsense. So I think I am willing to take the leap and I know I will be better off in the long run.

Re: Job Advice
Take the new job. Most of us can figure out a way to trim the fat with our budgets to make it work. And your salary can only go up. Is there a way to find out how often/what kind of raises they give at the new place? It may not be long before you are where you are now but working less hours. Which means more time with your family.
Also, didn't you at one point make edible favors ? If so, maybe you can make extra income that way. It won't be as much as what you're losing, but you may be able to make some extra $$ that way.

Oh man this sounds like such a terrible work environment. You lost me at cialis lol. You go get your new job and don't look back! It's technically not a paycut if you're working less hours.

Take the new job. I was recently in a similar situation- my current job was more flexible but I hit a ceiling and though I love the people I work with I didn't love the job itself. It's also in the city, so even though I work from home often, they days I go in are a nightmare. New job is a pretty significant raise and on LI. I took it. Sometimes you just know it's time to move on and it sounds like you're at that point.

$6k is not really much after taxes taken out. I would definitely take the new job believe me when I say having a flexible laid back boss is very important when you have small children you need that. I would take the pay cut. If you make some money off the book that's helpful as well
