I taught 3rd for a year and actually enjoyed the math (still CC) but 1st grade math is terrible.

I hate first grade math
As a teacher, my concern is it widens the achievement gap. There are so many more word problems. So where I child may only struggle in reading, they are now struggling in reading and math.

I hate first grade math
In theory I don't disagree with Common Core math. I think it is great that there are different ways to teach how to come up with an answer.
What I do disagree with is that children, who are logical thinkers, have a very hard time with the "out side the box" way they are being taught. I have no issue having the kids learn different ways but they should not be forced to use that way if they find another way easier. For example. My DD could times and divide in K. In third grade they were teaching them some crazy ass way to multiply and it make absolutely no sense to her. She did the classwork, did the homework but on the tests it was just easier for her to do it the way she wanted, which she always got the right answer which she only got 1/2 credit on because it wasn't the way they wanted it done. That to me goes against the entire concept of teaching different ways. Teach it but let them choose what is right for them.
Also the amount of word problems is very difficult for any child that is struggling with reading. I also have a problem with them wasting so much time on estimations. Teach them how to get an answer not an estimation which does no one any good in future jobs.

I feel like I'm in the minority, but I like the Common Core math. Yes, it takes more steps, but the kids really get it!
I like it too. I think you have to be a little bit of a math geek to like it.
I'm with you both.
I'm not sure how I feel about first graders seeing it this way but in the end, as a math geek, this is how I would solve these in my head. My bigger concern would be how long they get to focus on this kind of problem in order to master it. When common core was first proposed, addition and subtraction was supposed to be almost a year long focus in first grade. Not sure how much they really stuck with that idea at the elementary level.
My problem with it is that we were all older when we figured out how to group and break it down in our heads.
My 6 year old gets confused with all the steps needed to get the answer. We were stuck on a problem last week for almost 15 minutes, and he just yelled out 'Why can't i just use my fingers?"
I wish they would get rid of common core, it puts way too much pressure on kids today. There is an assessment on everything they do. It has ruined school for many kids. They dread going because there is always so much to do and tests to take. I talk to other moms in the class and their kids dread going to school as well. We were just told that starting in February, they will now have to read their own tests. Until now the teacher has read them out loud. Now they need to read 4-5 pages of paragraph like questions and answer them, in a timed setting. I mean c'mon!!! They are just learning how to read!!!! This is setting them up to fail.
If there is ONE POSITIVE THING I could say about Turmp being President, is that I HOPE he can get rid of this crap!!!
Common Core is just the standards. That's it.
It's not the assessments-that's your district.
It's not the millions of ways to solve a problem-that's the textbook publishers.
The standards simply state that students will develop strategies for adding and subtracting whole numbers.
That's it. They don't outline any specific way for students to get to the right answer.

DS loves this: he sees it as a game. They reviewed addition and subtraction cold and just started this month getting to 10. He really sees it in his head. That being said, I completed a high level of math in college (math minor) and have trouble with doing this. But I always counted on my fingers!
It's not just common core. Our school does "Singapore math" and it's the same thing.
Singapore Math is a curriculum aligned to Common Core. So again, it's just strategies developed by that particular publisher with their particular strategies, not Common Core strategies..

I hate first grade math
I love the way they are teaching math to my daughter. I have always supported it. At first the common core seemed so odd to everyone but me. It has always made sense to me. Ironically all this complaining about showing your math and it being hard was exactly the opposite for me.
*I* was the odd man out as a kid. *I* was the one who's work was shown in common core and *I* was the one getting half credit for all the work. Yet I struggled and got through. As a matter of fact I was told (ironically) that I had a form of ADD when it came to math that I could show you A and Z but B-Y got fuzzy and wrong. Wonder what they'd say now?
When I got to calculus A/P Math was a breeze. As a matter of fact the first words the teacher said were "Forget everything you learned about math" and I sighed a huge sigh of relief.
Now my daughter is in 3rd grade. They are doing multiplication and division (again as they touched them in 2nd). When we didn't really memorize them until 4th (I'm old). But they aren't memorizing them. It's painful for me to see her do the 'math' for 7X8 when she knows 7X7. Like seriously? But I shut up, watch her, encourage her and applaud her. It's fascinating .
But you know what? She knows them as factors. So although it was hard me for me to stay quiet I understood she didn't just 'know' 7x7 was 49 she understood WHY it was 49. So she can do 7x7x4 without feeling overwhelmed. Because it's not a larger multiplication it's just more factors. THAT's what common core does. Gives the language of math simple terms.
To them it's not any harder than it was to us to learn math. It's math.

Re: I hate first grade math
I personally have no problems with the common core math. Especially since our young kids have started out with it and have the foundation they need to succeed with common core concepts. That said, I do think it widens the gap between the kids that "get" math and the kids that don't. The kids that "get" math can really sail through this while those that may have struggled before will struggle more now imo. However, once they get it - they will REALLY get it.

I agree. My daughter struggles with math and this is really difficult for her. But as an adult who was good in math as a kid, I can see how much of what they are trying to accomplish makes sense and may come much easier to someone who "gets" math.

I totally agree with the above, and I come to this conclusion from both sides - I am a teacher and the parent of a first grader.
The whole purpose of differentiating instruction is that students use the tools they need to succeed.
"Make it a ten" is a tool in the toolbox. That's it.
If a student is struggling in math, I can see using that method to teach, maybe in a small group, but only if necessary. If a student has mastered subtraction another way, teaching it this way is not necessary, at least not in conjunction with a million other ways that are then rushed through.
This curriculum is very cookie cutter, one size fits all - the opposite of what education should be.

Yeah the thing is, I don't think they are ready for this kind of logic and reasoning at their age yet. DD is great with doing it the old school way, this to me just complicates matters to get the same result and she gets frustrated.
I get the logic of it, but I think they are too young for this logic at 6 years old
Exactly... We all figured this out when our brains were ready to handle it. It not developmentally appropriate to be doing this at this point. When your brain is ready for that many steps and holding that kind of information in short term memory.... it will figure it out.

It's funny because I had DD's parent-teacher conference yesterday and brought that up to the teacher and she agreed. She said it's not really age appropriate at 6 years old to be figuring it out this way- she said it's more like a 3rd grade line of thought. But whatever...such is the world we live in now. Make them do more, earlier.
