Relocating to NC, outside the Charlotte area
Anyone have any info on suburbs outside of Charlotte NC? Good schools, safe area, family friendly, less than an hour commute to Charlotte preferred.
Anyone made the move or know others who have? I know NC tends to be a popular destination on the boards so hope you all can share some info.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Relocating to NC, outside the Charlotte area
I have family in Waxhaw and they really love it. Schools are crowded in most areas because of of a lot of relocating northerns.

Re: Relocating to NC, outside the Charlotte area
I have a lot of family in the Charlotte area. Some that live just outside of Charlotte are in Stallings, and others live in Waxhaw. The family in Stallings have school aged kids, but they just started kindergarten. So far, they are happy. My sisters family lives in Charlotte and her kids all went to the Charlotte schools for high school (they lived in NY prior.) they all did very well in college, all went to NC state schools.

My husband has a lot of staff in his Charlotte office (all transplanted NYers) and most live in Fort Mills, SC.

Why did you hate it? You can fm if you prefer. Curious to hear positives and negatives of the area.

Re: Relocating to NC, outside the Charlotte area
A good friend from college recently moved to Waxhaw (I think that was it.) She LOVES it. She has 2 boys - maybe middle or high school and they seem to be really happy.
I moved to the Chapel Hill area - wow, well almost 20 years ago. We stayed about a year and a half. It was nice. But DH got a job offer on LI so we moved back.
My brother started down in Chapel Hill in 1996 and moved to Raleigh in 1999. He loves it down there and would never move back. It's really pretty nice. I was only in Charlotte a couple of times but I prefer the Raleigh area. I guess Charlotte seemed too - well, Southern for me.

it just wasn't for us at that time of our life. i also found it very racist. we were down there for Obamas first run and win and the things i saw, turned me off. being pregnant and being an a interracial marriage, it wasn't for us.

Yeah, that's something that concerns me as well, it being the south and all. I was hoping being near the city it might not be as bad.

I recently was on vacation and ran into a couple from Charlotte that are originally from LI and said the same exact thing. They have their house up for sale to move back to LI. I also have a friend who moved there from Fla three months ago and just sold the house to go back to Fla. I can't speak, as I have never been.

I moved here from Durham, NC and I actually find LI *way* more racist. We're moving back to NC soon but we're purposely moving to the liberal area (Durham/Chapel Hill) so we won't encounter all the racist and conservative BS.

I agree about Long Island but have no comparison of the 2 areas. My guess would be that on Long Island racism is more overt and less direct.

Thanks for the info on Raleigh and how it compares to Charlotte in your experience. The job prospect would be in Charlotte. Is the culture in both cities vastly different? Interesting that you thought Raleigh was less "southern". I appreciate all info.
