Vaccinations
Ok so talk to me about the vaccination schedule. I hear differing views on if you should follow it or not. My SIL says only the MMR vaccination was cause for concern but they changed it so it no longer has the ingredient thato believed to cause autism. I have a cousin who is all for some alternative schedule and then I have a friend that highly suggests I have each shot done separately (her child has autism)
I don't know what's a creditable source to rely on or not. I know this is a controversial topic but if you don't mind sharing what you chose to do or not and why it would be greatly appreciated.
There is so much info out there it's overwhelming.

Vaccines do NOT cause autism - they never did! Some lying doctor published a study that was FALSE.
I follow the vaccine schedule to protect my D.C. and those who cannot get vaccinated due to compromised immune systems.

There is a confirmed case of measles in Suffolk County right now and a second I think in jersey.
I always went by my doctor's recommendation.

Re: Vaccinations
There only is real scientific literature saying there is no association between autism and vaccines. There are lots of opinion pieces. My Dr says the MMR got the worst blame just because the timing of the vaccine is right around when autism starts to show (that's actually the only thing that the original paper on the "link" said: it was trying to tie in a GI condition to autism and was a case report meaning not a scientific study but just something saying hmmm the timing is similar). Extremists ran with it... but I really didn't think the original paper said anything strong at all.
I get it, very scary to have a baby, see the huge rise in autism (esp if you have a boy) and question what is causing it.
Our peds office lets us split vaccines over 2 weeks (less shots for baby but more visits). We did this. Also with child #3 we got the MMR earlier (new reccs) because of the rise in measles and we do travel. All kids are fine.

Vaccinations
The way I see it, I follow my lawyer's advice for legal issues, my accountant's for tax advice, I listen to my doctors for health issues. They are the subject matter expert. Almost the entire US medical community and AAP recommend a certain schedule. For my own sanity, I have to trust it.

Re: Vaccinations
My son has autism (he is on the pretty severe end of the spectrum) and he was diagnosed before he got the MMR, so I am also in the camp that does not believe that vaccines cause autism. I also have a neurotypical daughter and so far she has received all of her vaccines w/ no issues.

Vaccinations
I spread their vaccines out. I give the baby one each month and I am not that behind schedule by doing so. I do it so that if he has a reaction I will be able to know from which shot it was. Their bodies are so little, I feel like 2/3 shots at once is just overload in their bodies. Its also partially selfish bc I think its so sad when they get a shot that one is enough at a time lol

Re: Vaccinations
Vaccinations do not cause autism. It's completely unfounded. It's usually given around 15 months which is coincidentally when the signs of autism first appear.
I follow my drs recommendations, but I do not give more than two shots in one visit (not two vaccines, two shots).
For example at 15 months both girls got the mmr and the flu shots. Then a month later I brought them back for the chicken pox and second dose for the flu shot.
They're both up to date and always will be.

Re: Vaccinations
Talk to your ped about your concerns. If you are uncomfortable with the schedule find something that works for you. Our ped spaces out the shots so that they never get more than two in a visit. It means we have well visits every month for the first six months, but I feel much better about that than them getting four shots in one visit. I personally don't like to do varicella and MMR in one visit so I split those up too.

Vaccinations
We waited until 2 years old to give MMR and all others we just spaced them out so my kids didn't get more than 2 shots per visit. We had to have a few more visits but I would rather that than give them a bunch of shots in one visit. The only one I really had a strong opinion on waiting on was the MMR - glad I did bc both my kids had reactions. I left the rest up to my ped - he is great. I told him I didn't want them having more than 2 and he decided which ones to give and when.

Re: Vaccinations
For my first I followed the schedule exactly, assuming that whatever research I've done, my doctors have done much more, and nothing I found compelled me to delay.
For my second we're on a delayed scheduled, but only because of health issues she's had from birth. Her doctor suggested, and I agreed, and we give one a time due to her comprised immune system that seemed to be effected after her first few rounds of vaccines.

Vaccinations
Follow your gut, do your research and make a decision you are comfortable with. Adverse reactions are rare but REAL and are documented by the manufacturers themselves. Autism is always the hot topic but in reality, there are an array of reactions to be concerned about.
We delay and have followed Dr. Sears' alternative schedule. MMR waited until 2.5 and 5, our pediatrician was supportive and respectful.
Here is the package insert for MMRII from: http://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/UCM123789.pdf
The following adverse reactions are listed in decreasing order of severity, without regard to causality, within each body system category and have been reported during clinical trials, with use of the marketed vaccine, or with use of monovalent or bivalent vaccine containing measles, mumps, or rubella: Body as a Whole Panniculitis; atypical measles; fever; syncope; headache; dizziness; malaise; irritability. Cardiovascular System Vasculitis. Digestive System Pancreatitis; diarrhea; vomiting; parotitis; nausea. Endocrine System Diabetes mellitus. Hemic and Lymphatic System Thrombocytopenia (see WARNINGS, Thrombocytopenia); purpura; regional lymphadenopathy; leukocytosis. 7 Immune System Anaphylaxis and anaphylactoid reactions have been reported as well as related phenomena such as angioneurotic edema (including peripheral or facial edema) and bronchial spasm in individuals with or without an allergic history. Musculoskeletal System Arthritis; arthralgia; myalgia. Arthralgia and/or arthritis (usually transient and rarely chronic), and polyneuritis are features of infection with wild-type rubella and vary in frequency and severity with age and sex, being greatest in adult females and least in prepubertal children. This type of involvement as well as myalgia and paresthesia, have also been reported following administration of MERUVAX II. Chronic arthritis has been associated with wild-type rubella infection and has been related to persistent virus and/or viral antigen isolated from body tissues. Only rarely have vaccine recipients developed chronic joint symptoms. Following vaccination in children, reactions in joints are uncommon and generally of brief duration. In women, incidence rates for arthritis and arthralgia are generally higher than those seen in children (children: 0-3%; women: 12-26%),{17,56,57} and the reactions tend to be more marked and of longer duration. Symptoms may persist for a matter of months or on rare occasions for years. In adolescent girls, the reactions appear to be intermediate in incidence between those seen in children and in adult women. Even in women older than 35 years, these reactions are generally well tolerated and rarely interfere with normal activities. Nervous System Encephalitis; encephalopathy; measles inclusion body encephalitis (MIBE) (see CONTRAINDICATIONS); subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE); Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS); acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM); transverse myelitis; febrile convulsions; afebrile convulsions or seizures; ataxia; polyneuritis; polyneuropathy; ocular palsies; paresthesia. Encephalitis and encephalopathy have been reported approximately once for every 3 million doses of M-M-R II or measles-, mumps-, and rubella-containing vaccine administered since licensure of these vaccines.....

This site has an older MMR package insert (and a listing of all package inserts), it's much more detailed. Good luck with your decision.

I was only comfortable doing one injection at a time. My pediatrician was on board with this.
I also waited with the chicken pox vaccine until they had to get for school

Vaccinations
We did an extremely delayed schedule. My doctors supported that. As a result, he will only need about 15 injections instead of the 50 or so that most babies receive. I have never had a problem from any pre-schools he attended and while yes he is playing catch-up, we have not had an issue from NYS or school bc he is receiving his vaccinations. They are just on my schedule, not theirs. A benefit is that he also has had zero reactions to every vaccine he's received bc he was older when he received them.
We'll most likely do the same with our daughter.

This, 100%. I wouldn't even use a ped who allowed these nonsensical, made-up vaccine schedules.
Think about this: A child with whooping cough (or measles, though, yes, less common) gets into an elevator at the peds office. A woman taking her newborn for a check up gets into the elevator with them. Child coughs next to newborn. Newborn gets whooping cough. Newborn is hospitalized and nearly dies (or does). All because some parent with a PhD from Google thought they knew better than the CDC. Do you want to be that parent?
Parenting comes with a responsibility not just to one's own child, but to the entire community.

Re: Vaccinations
I did one shot per visit and put off the MMR until 2. I know the research says there is no link to autism, but I knew there was a chance there would be some sort of reaction and felt it would be easier to deal with at 2 than 12 months. Do what you feel comfortable with, there is no right or wrong.

Vaccinations
There are a number of delayed/ spread out vaccine schedules you can follow if you are concerned. Dr.Sears, as some other people have mentioned, has a good one. My ped offers a spread out schedule by default, never more than 1 or 2 shots at a time. He argues that one of the benefits is that IF there is a reaction, you know which shot caused it. I'd also suggest doing research on the likelihood of an adverse reaction to the vaccine vs. the chances of contracting the disease you are vaccinating against. Definitely check out Dr.Sears book , I found it to be fair minded and balanced. No fear mongering, he's not anti vaccine , but addresses alot of common concerns.

Re: Vaccinations
The hand out the pediatrician offers you is not the entire story. You must be your child's advocate and read the vaccine pamphlets in their entirety. Do not just trust your child's doctor because they are a doctor. The problem with the vaccinations these days are the amount suggested to be given and on the timeframe given. It's just too much... There is such a thing called Vaccine injury. It's a fact. I am not saying that they cause autism, but I have done plenty of research on them and have read the pamphlets.

This! I mostly follow the schedule given. HOWEVER, they are now grouping lots of things together in each shot, which has led to issues. We follow the schedule given, EXCEPT we always make sure the live vaccinations are given separately from any other one. Also, we waited until after 2yo for the MMR. Not necessarily bc of autism, but bc of complications associated with it which can be severe. If you wait until after 2 years old the blood/ brain barrier closes/ completes and if there is inflammation it will hopefully not cause swelling in the brain, etc bc the baby is more developed.

Re: Vaccinations
i follow the doctor's schedule. my DS is 6 and is just fine. has had no reactions to any of his vaccines.
a friend of mine, i believe has chosen either not to vaccinate, or to do a delayed schedule. (she never answered my direct question but did mention the baby has not had the mmr yet) every time the baby is around other children, the baby gets sick. i'm also weary to have Ds play with him just in case Ds gets him sick or vice versa.
now, with mumps on the rise, i am especially concerned.
either way, by the time your child goes to K, they will need to have all their shots up to date.
the only one we don't do is the flu vaccine, but it is optional.
