So interesting to read this. My dd is in a high back booster but almost every kid at drop iff looks to be in a regular boister
My dd is in preschool and it looks like to me most kids are already in a regular booster. I kept thinking maybe I'm wrong and dd keeps asking why she doesn't use a regular seatbelt like her friend. Dd is still in a regular 5pt car seat, and I'll probably be keeping it like that through kindergarten.
You are not wrong. They are. It's not rocket science and I would think it's common sense but apparently for many, it is not.
yes the recommended age to be in a seat belt is no earlier than 5 simply because most children would not be mature enough for a seat belt yet.
But you should know that a booster with a seatbelt is just as safe as a harness as long as it used CORRECTLY and that is the key correctly.
Its actually recommended that a child get trained to use the booster seat with belt on short trips. They need to be able to sit properly the entire time including sleeping to use one.
Also a high back vs no back booster is no difference in safety either just the high back helps the child and seat belt be positioned correctly.
DD falls asleep a lot in the car so I feel safer with her in a harness for now. I see no reason to move her since I bought the seat SPECIFICALLY for it's high weight/height limit for the 5 pt harness. She sat with a bubble bum inflatable booster once in an Uber so yeah she knows how to sit, I"m not worried about that so much.

I am with you. I have britax frontier and I plan on having DD stay in there as 5 point harness for quite some time.
She isn't ready anyway I have let her sit in seatbelt booster when I have had too and she does not sit still in it so she is constantly moving around. So I told her that is why she won't be in one full time yet.
Many parent do rush switching it kills me when I see people under 5 in a seatbelt. Kills me even more when I see kids that have not reached the height requriements and the test in no booster at all.
And even more when I see parents let their 8/9 year old sitting in the front seat which to me is just plain stupid!!
It took everything in me to not say something to parents on my cheer team when I saw that their barely 4 year old was in no car seat at all!! which I know realize is 100% against the law!!

There is an article I posted on a recent thread about this. The parents had their child in nothing at all- just a seatbelt- at like 5 or 6 years old Her injuries from a crash were HORRIFIC. I wish everyone would be forced to read that article

1st grader in a 5 point harness. He doesn't complain about it and it "fits" his height and weight.

Through half of second grade, my DS was still in the 5 pt harness with high back booster. My DD is entering K in the fall and is still in the 5pt harness (regular carseat) and will be for some time to come. They both remained in the 5pt until the met the height and weight limitations and not a day sooner.
This My 6.5 year old son is still in a 5pt harness. He JUST reached the max height last week for the Graco Argo so he will go into the high back booster over the weekend. it is the absolute safest for them to be in the 5pt harness as long as possible. My daughter is 18 months old and will be rear facing for a very very long time I never get what the rush is to get them into a booster

Mamas of Kindergarteners and first graders come in
I DS is in a seat that is appropriate for his height and weight and he sits properly in.
I file this one in who cares what others do. Do what is right for your kid.

Because a seat belt is way easier than the damn 5 pt harness. I'm lazy with 99% of things in my life. No joke. I'm the laziest fck you'll ever meet. Sometimes I scare myself with my sheer laziness. But when it comes to my DD's safety that's the 1% of the time I suck it up

Mamas of Kindergarteners and first graders come in
my son is 6.5, and finishing Kindergarten. He's still in a high back seat, WITH the five-point harness. Hes on the small side, we do a lot of long trips (both sides of the family live a few hours away) and he always falls asleep in the car... so i'm in no rush. there are SO many more cars on the road now, and so many more distracted drivers with phones and stuff--- so its important to me. he buckles himself now, so its no extra work for me, and he's not complaining... so no rush.

daughter is 6 and is still in 5 pt harness booster for the cars she is in most often (mine, MIL, and nanny). If we are in a friends car she's just in a booster seat. But she'll be in this Britax booster seat at least another year.

I dont find the seat belt easier. Its always tricky to get it around the seat and make sure everything is lined up properly. DD can buckle herself in the 5pt seat and i just look to make sure she has the chest clip positioned properly. Her doing that is easier for me and turns out to be the safest. It took us like an extra 5 minutes to get her buckled yesterday in a friends car.

Interesting. I haven't tried a seat belt yet other than in an Uber from the airport on vacation with a bubble bum low back booster. That seemed ok. I guess it's trickier with the high back booster though. I am thinking she will hit the height limit in about a year and we'll have to convert to high back. Until then, I'm fine with the harness and yes ,she can get in and out of it herself now which is great

DS 7 is 52 lbs 51 inches in a Britax Frontier 85 with 5 point harness. DH wants him in a backless booster...
DS isn't complaining so we negotiated and went to seat belt mode with the Frontier in one car. He fits fine both ways but I of course feel he's safer in the 5 point..

Re: Mamas of Kindergarteners and first graders come in
I finally moved my 8 year old third grader from a 5 pt harness to a high back booster earlier this year. He didn't really complain, he's small for his age and I don't care what other people are doing. I want to be as safe as possible with the car seats. The only reason I may convert it to a low booster in my car this summer is depending on how 3 car seats fit in my car once #3 arrives. The car seat in DH's car, which is what we use on the weekends, will remain a high back booster.

My kindergartener is in a high back booster with the regular seat belt. We just made the switch this past weekend by removing the 5 point harness belt.

DS turns six this month - and he's still in a 5-point harness. He doesn't mind it. I plan to keep him in it as long as possible. (he's definitely tall and heavy enough to be in a booster.)

Mamas of Kindergarteners and first graders come in
My Kindergartener is 6.5 and just graduated to a no-back booster around 2 months ago. His shoulders were getting too wide for the high back, and he went from 5 point harness to no back booster. He sits really well in the seat and I haven't had any problems with him moving around.

yeah we tried it with a high back booster first and it wasn't comfortable for her - this was a friends booster that her 4.5 year old son uses and my daughter is 6 - then we took the back part off and it was just a little booster seat but it still took a lot of extra time buckling her in. It isn't always this hard when I've done it in the past but I feel like i can install a car seat quicker than i can get her buckled with the seat belt in a booster.

Re: Mamas of Kindergarteners and first graders come in
I think it has less to do with age and more to do with size. My son is 7.5 and he doesn't sit in any type of booster at all. He is incredibly tall for his age (wears a size 10/12) and has a long torso so in a booster the seat belt was not securing him properly. Meanwhile, my daughter who just turned 10, was in a booster until 6 months ago because while she is tall, she is all legs so the seatbelt didn't hit right.

Mamas of Kindergarteners and first graders come in
One thing that kills me is the number of kids at DS' school that sit in the front seat (in second grade). We went to the school concert today and were there early to get good seats and saw all of these parents dropping off their second graders sitting in the front seat!

I am not 100% sure but I believe that is a summonsable offense. I have to ask DH if it's actually a law or not.
Either way it's shameful. Airbags in the front are NOT meant for children that young and could cause very bad injuries in a crash. Are people just stupid? Or do they not give a shit?
ETA - googled real quick- it's not a law in NY apparently.
Although New York does not have a law preventing children from sitting in the front seat, it is highly recommended that all children age 12 and under ride properly restrained in the back seat.
