Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
How long does it typically take to recover from having a top wisdom tooth extracted? It is not impacted (it is fully erupted) and not giving me problems, but my dentist does not like how it is positioned in my mouth.
I am DREADING having it removed. I will have it removed the last week of June and I am going away on July 9th...

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
I had both of mine done with novicaine, and was back at work a few hours later. I think I may have taken tylenol that day? but only because I had a rehearsal for my school's show with my kids.

Re: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
Very short, it's easy to pull out a fully erupted tooth. Tylenol should help with any discomfort, take two and hour before and two four hours later.
I've had three partially impacted pulled by the regular dentist. A day of discomfort, nothing more.
The last one had to be pulled by an oral surgeon because it was partially impacted and the roots were twisted near my molar.

Re: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
The tops are so easy. I had one that was really badly decayed but I kept putting off getting it out because I was chicken. Then I had a molar 2 teeth away from it crack into the root and I had no choice but to get that out because it was causing an abscess.
So I figured while I was numbed up there anyway, let him take out the wisdom tooth too and kill 2 birds with one stone.
I only had Novocaine- didn't get put out or sweet air or anything. The worst part was the needles- I needed quite a few and it's a sensitive area but once I was numb I felt nothing except pushing an pulling. The wisdom tooth was out so fast I had no idea it was even out. He was working on the other molar and said, I'm almost done- and I said- ok then you move on to the molar right? He said- I am working on the molar now! The wisdom tooth has been out for 10 minutes! It popped right out- maybe because it was pretty badly decayed- I don't know. But he did tell me the top ones aren't very deeply rooted.
I had one stitch in my molar extraction- but the wisdom tooth no stitches at all.
I went to work the next day and felt fine. I only took motrin that night and honestly would have been fine without it, but I wanted to ward off any pain before the numbness wore off. He gave me vicodins but I didn't even need to fill them.
Just have to be careful with eating on that side for a few days and no sucking through straws to avoid dry socket.
Other than that, the recovery was a breeze!
If it's not impacted and especially on the top, it will be super easy. You'll be fine the next day and 100% with eating everything again in less than a week I am sure

Re: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
Oh and Motrin/Advil is always better than Tylenol for any pain or discomfort in cases like this because it's an anti- inflammatory.
You can take up to 4 (4 is a prescription dose)- that usually knocks out ANYTHING for me.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
I was down for the count for 2 weeks. Couldn't talk or eat. I had 4 impacted and a cyst removed from my jaw so I'm sure my recovery is longer than most but my tongue was so swollen I couldn't talk properly for like 5 days... totally not the norm. Most people I know it's a few days

ALL impacted and I had them done the same day. Was fine that afternoon. Went to the gym the next day. I guess it depends on your pain tolerance and how bad they were impacted.

I had both top ones out at the same time and it took about 3-4 days to recover but I had an allergic reaction to the novocaine in my hard palate and I think it was more that than the actual extraction causing the pain. If you stick to oatmeal, smoothies, anything that doesn't require much chewing it's not all that bad. Pain was manageable with ordinary Advil.

Re: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
I had all 4 done at once. They weren't impacted either. I had zero swelling. The doctor told me to stay ahead of the pain, so I was diligent about taking Motrin every 4 hours for the first day but that was it. I took one prescribed pain pill when I first got home but I am not a fan of them so went to Motrin after that.
I was out and about in a day. I was a little uncomfortable for a few days but not in pain.

Motrin / Advil can cause the blood to thin, so there could be more bleeding. That's why Tylenol is usually recommended. That and an ice pack if there is any swelling.

It sounds like yours shouldn't be too bad, I'd say you will be fine in a day or two. I had 4 impacted done at once, and they also had to remove jawbone. I was down for the count for quite a bit...literally begging for someone to kill me that night. I think with two uppers erupted it should be fine!

Re: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
My concern would be a dry socket and then that requiring addition recovery time, another visit, etc. Me personally...I would schedule it for after vacation, especially if it does not bother you at all.

Re: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
I had two impacted out about 15 years ago (bottom two). Misery and dry socket hell.
I had my top two fully erupted out 3 days ago (this past Friday). I was pretty out of it that day, was a bit better on Saturday. Felt good yesterday and am fine (except the gaping holes in my mouth) today.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
I had a top and bottom on the same side removed (fully erupted) and I was eating dinner that night like nothing happened. My recovery was a lot easier than I expected.

I wouldn't get it done. If it's not bothering you and it's already up, I'd leave it. I'd get a second opinion if I felt like it from an oral surgeon.

Re: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
I had 3 impacted, and to be honest I found it worse than csection recovery BUT with just ONE that isn't even impacted, I really think you'll be fine.

Thanks Everyone! My uncle is actually an oral surgeon so I think I am going to ask him for his opinion.

Please do. This sounds unnecessary from what you posted. Especially when you're about to go away and everything… And if it's not bothering you at all… I totally would get a second opinion.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
I had the same situation as you for my top wisdom tooth. I had it out and was fine the next day. The worst part for me was having the anesthesia wear off. I waited until the wisdom tooth was giving me constant pain though and then had it out - it even had a couple of cavities in it I think!

I tend to agree. I don't believe in removing a tooth for no reason. And I don't trusts dentists to be honest.. a lot of times they just say to remove wisdom teeth need to or not. I still have my other 3 because they aren't bothering me. When they tell me to remove them I ignore them

Re: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery
What about its position ur dentist doesn't like about? I have my top 2 wisdom teeth, but not my bottom ones. I had to have them removed because they were impacted. The dentist removed them in the same visit and once the numbing wore off, I didn't even need to take any pain killer. By the second day I was able to eat solids that were easy to chew, I had to wait a little longer to eat harder things though. I've heard that of the dentist has a "good hand" meaning he's gentle and to the point, u can have an easier recovery
