Baby proofing help
The stairs to the basement are in my kitchen. My 5 year old and 2 year old are down in their playroom all the time. I always keep the door open in the kitchen so that I can hear and I also have the baby monitor down there so I can watch.
Here's the issue: My 10 month old is now on the go. I have been trying to train my older 2 to shut the basement door when they go up and down. Inevitably, the door is left open. Twice now in the past two days I turned just in time to see the baby's little feet sticking out ready to go down the stairs. Those were my two warnings. Now I have to do something.
A gate isn't really practical. My older 2 are up and down the stairs constantly. Closing the door is obviously the most practical thing to do but its a matter of whomever is coming through the door to remember to shut it. Its impractical for me to rely on either of my older 2 to remember to shut the door. I'm always around but if I'm making dinner or something, I may not notice the open door right away and we all know all it takes is a split second for tragedy to strike.
Has anyone dealt with this before or have a solution? I was trying to see if there was some type of spring I could attach to the door to make it automatically close on its own but if anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear them!

Baby proofing help
Is there a way to just keep the baby out of the kitchen so the basement door isn't acceesible? In my house the basement door is in the living room so I keep my 1 yo out of that room unless I'm in there playing with him and fully watching him. Or you could install a gate at the top of the stairs, but that might be hard for a 2 year old to operate.

Re: Baby proofing help
I have this one from my living room down to my basement where the playroom is. My oldest is 4, so he is able to operate it - i keep my 10 month old mostly barricaded in the living room.
but its a spring effect, so if installed properly, once its opened and you let go, it springs closed and clicks into place again. Its been working well so far. Ocassionally it doesnt click all the way...but i think that might be because my son tried to close himself or something and didnt let it close itself...it needs a little force to click in. So i still have to watch constantly, but its better than nothing...

Re: Baby proofing help
I have a spring load gate that snaps shut from my family room to my basement The basement also has a door but my older two were not consistently shutting the door and unfortunately we were part of that split second group - thank god the baby was okay -but I had a permanent gate installed by the next day!

Baby proofing help
I was also going to suggest a spring loaded gate. Automatically snaps shut after somebody walks through it

Re: Baby proofing help
get a retractable gate. they are much easier and only need to be pulled out when needed.

We don't have a door to our basement- it's just a staircase that leads to a side entrance and then another staircase down to the basement.
