Favorite cruise lines
Dh mentioned he wants to go on a cruise sometime next year. It would be dh, me, and our 1 yr old and 5 yr old. It's dh's 40th so I would love to surprise him. It would be Sept or Oct so I would definitely purchase insurance in case its cancelled because of hurricane. Would love if one of the ports were PR so we could meet up with family.
Never cruised before, any recommendations?

Royal Caribbean is wonderful. Have never been on Disney so can't compare it to that but you definitely can't go wrong with RC

We have been on Disney, NCL, Royal and Carnival and Royal is probably the best overall cruiseline for us unless we are staying in a suite and then it would be NCL. Royal is fun for the kids as well as the adults.

We've been on Disney, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Princess. Disney is by far the best one, in my opinion.

Re: Favorite cruise lines
i really like NCL. They offer the free at sea promotion often so I'm able to get the drink package and just pay the service fee on it. So for around $100, I can have any alcholic beverage, soda, juice thats under $15 for free, as many times as I want for the length of cruise. Anything over $15 you pay the difference. I know other cruise ships drink package limit you to how many drinks you can get per day. (alcohol) I also love the freestyle dining. I dont want to have a set meal time and I also dont want to feel obligated to get dressed up.

I've personally been on Royal Caribbean and Princess and they were both really good - but Royal remains my favorite.
My clients lean towards Royal and NCL. Feedback I've gotten is Royal's service is fabulous... however NCL right now has the better deals so the value makes it worth it.

Re: Favorite cruise lines
We usually cruise for vacations and have done Carnival, Disney, NCL, Royal and Holland America.
I would say Royal Caribbean would be top choice, they have best entertainment and onboard activities. We also like NCL. There are several cruises that leave from Puerto Rico and do southern Caribbean which would be good to avoid hurricane weather and give you a change to visit family before or after cruise.

Disney has a repositioning cruise in the late fall that leaves from NYC and ends in Puerto Rico. DCL is the perfect line for that age because they have so many kids activities that you'd be able to do adult activities with your husband too.

Ditto! My favorite part of NCL is the anytime dining. Sometimes we go early to catch a show, sometimes we spend all day at the pool, take a nap, and have a late dinner. The best part of a cruise is not being on the clock!

Just remember, if you book this cruise you need a passport since it ends up in PR, not back in NY. Most people cruise with a passport, but many don't...and aren't aware with this itinerary you need one.

Thank you. We all have one including my eldest. I just have to get one for my youngest.

Re: Favorite cruise lines
Also, keep in mind that most cruise lines have a certain theme, or clientele in mind. We didn't want to do a Disney cruise because DC thought it was too young for them, and DW and I didn't want to have a Disney-focused ship and activities.
My mom loves Holland America (I think she's been on the ships more than some of the captains! ). However, that line is great for her, since it's geared towards older passengers without kids. That wouldn't really work for us, though.

How do you find out themes? Google?

P.S, many of the activities for kids on a Disney cruise, aren't even all that "Disney focused". In the kids club, my daughter has....made flubber, raced a car out of soap that they carved themselves, baked cookies and cupcakes, made straw houses out of spaghetti to knock over, we as a family have played bingo, learned how to fold washcloths into weird animals, raced cars made out of vegetables, played trivia games and game shows, had dance parties, and an abundance of other awesome activities. I can see how some kids might not be interested in that, but it's definitely not ALL Disney stuff, all the time.
