cape full remodel with a full second floor....
Has anyone completely gutted their cape home... moved the kitchen, knocked down walls, added a full second floor with attic and extra bathrooms, etc? Have a bunch of questions. Trying to decide if i should do this, or buy a new build home. Thanks!

We did it but, we didn't move or redo the kitchen.
We decided this was the best option for us because we loved our location and got a great deal on the house.

We had to choose between buying a house that we'd eventually have to completely gut and add a second floor to get what we want or building new. For us, it came down to location, location, location.
The lot we could have built on was on a busy street, and while it is an oversized lot for our area, it wasn't huge. Instead we bought a small house on a quiet street with a larger piece of property. We haven't done the renovations yet, because we're still saving up, but that's the long term plan. I honestly like the location so much more that I don't mind if we never get around to renovating. I'll make it work in the small house to have the nice quiet backyard.

We didn't gut the downstairs but we extended the downstairs and put 4 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.
When we bought our house we had the intention of doing this. We liked our neighborhood and location.

We did this. I would say we should have expanded the first floor, We didn't. If I were to do it again, I would have knocked the whole thing down and started with a new house build. I feel we made compromises to stay within our footprint and really needed some additional space. It would have cost more, but I don't think it would have been that much more, we literally did everything, new plumbing electric, insulation, windows, stairs et al.

We gutted the first floor when we moved in. We are about to start on the 2 nd floor. We have 2 bedrooms up there now but are taking it down to the studs and doing 3 beds and a bath up there.
