North Shore LIJ Private Rooms and Insurance
So according to my insurance, if I were to stay in a private room during L&D , my insurance would pay the amount for a semi private room and I would have to pay for the difference in cost between a private room and a semi private room- UNLESS there were no semi private rooms available.
I would liove to be in a private room but not if its going to cost me $$$$!!
Does North Shore now ONLY offer private rooms? If they have both, should I then request a semi private room if i dont want to pay the difference that my insurance will not cover ?
Thanks!

Re: North Shore LIJ Private Rooms and Insurance
i dont think you can request anything!! all there rooms now are private.. i think they charge the insurance as a regular room,,, there not considered a private room that you pay extra for!!! so you shouldn't worry!!

Re: North Shore LIJ Private Rooms and Insurance
When you say North Shore LIJ are you referring to the one in New Hyde Park?? If so their Katz Womens Hospital at that location is not complete and won't be until 2012. North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset new Katz Womens Hospital is complete to where all the rooms are private (opened in June of this year) so you wouldn't have to worry. Which one are you delivering at?????

Re: North Shore LIJ Private Rooms and Insurance
North shore only has private rooms. It was so great staying there, It really felt like a hotel. Every part of that experience was more then I could have hoped for. From the decor, to the shower, the food, and the love seat that turned into a single bed for someone else to sleep in.

North Shore LIJ Private Rooms and Insurance
Hey everybody,
my wife and I are a bit of a special case because she's a German national and doesn't have immigrant status. We're working on getting her healthcare through me, even though we both live in Germany. If we can't get healthcare in the US, then we'll have to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed in Germany through our health insurance there.
The plan is to have our child in the US so we can be near my parents on Long Island, but we're trying to figure out about what the costs are between North Shore LIJ vs Winthrop. Can anyone help out with estimates, or what the cost was (total - not just what you paid with insurance help).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I think you're going to need to talk to someone at the hospitals to get an accurate amount. I checked my bill for November 2016 at Winthrop. Between the insurance and my coinsurance, the hospital received the full amount billed, so I think they only billed the in-network fee. IIRC, last time they billed about twice as much. The hospital bill was 11,831.27. The anesthesiologist billed $260 and was paid that (again, I think they billed the network amount). My OB billed $7,500 and was paid around $4,000.

Re: North Shore LIJ Private Rooms and Insurance
I had a c-section in July at Winthrop. I don't know what the total bills came to before insurance - but I remember my baby's room fee was more than $18K and she stayed in the room with me the entire time along with a roommate and her baby. So four of us together and the baby's room bill was separate from mine. Also, we only stayed 2 nights (born Friday in a scheduled c-section and left Sunday afternoon).
I don't know how people can do this without insurance. It's a messed up system.

Re: North Shore LIJ Private Rooms and Insurance
I don't have any specific numerical answers, but keep in mind that patients are billed differently when they have insurance and when they don't. Insurance companies are billed much more because they only pay out a percentage.
