I got summoned, I live over 75 miles from Brooklyn. I called and explained this and said I wasn’t coming but would gladly serve in the courts in islip. I was asked to write a letter so I did sent it certified and 6 months later received a summons for islip. There was no way I was going to Brooklyn so I did the federal through islip so I’m good 10 years from then (2015) they would have had to come pick me up and bring me there themselves to get me to go

Yeah that is what I would do. That is horseshit to expect someone to travel 75 miles when they can serve federal just as easily in their own county. Just another example of how fuked up and disorganized and inefficient our court system is.

Re: Brooklyn jury duty
I live in Queens and had to serve in Brooklyn Federal. I took the express bus into Manhattan and then the 4 train to Brooklyn. On the way home, I would stop stop in my office for a little while to get more work to take with me to court.

Brooklyn jury duty
call and ask to be switched to Central Islip. They may or may not honor it. For the most part they try too. It sucks but because its all one district they have to try to pull juries from all parts of the district and try to make it fair

Re: Brooklyn jury duty
I live in SI and just served in Bklyn Federal court earlier this year (got stuck on a grand jury - once a week for almost 6 months). If you notify them before you are scheduled to report (do NOT wait until the day you are to report because they will not make any allowance) that the travel will be a hardship, they will excuse you from reporting to Bklyn but you can expect to get called to Islip. And when you report, you can be placed on either a trial jury or a grand jury. While the grand jury was a bit of a pain, it is quite flexible. We didn't have to report every week and sometimes when we did report, we were only there for an hour and they were flexible with you missing days (for vacation and such) if you gave them notice. There were some other jurors who did live far out on the island and it sucked when they had to travel all the way to Bklyn for just an hour. You are given a travel allowance based on the distance between your zip code and the courthouse and if your travel expenses exceed the daily allowance, you can put in receipts for the difference. This includes parking and LIRR.

Re: Brooklyn jury duty
I was put on a case that lasted 2 weeks. I think you can make the most of it. Enjoy a good book on the train. It’s only a stop or 2 on the subway from Atlantic ave LIRR terminal. The courthouses are in a great area of Brooklyn and are fairly new. There’s farmers markets in cadman plaza. It’s a 4 block walk to the promenade. There’s Montague street with great places to eat and some shopping. I lived in this area of Brooklyn for years and it’s great. IMO, I’d take the Brooklyn courthouses any day over being isolated in the Nassau or Suffolk courthouse areas, esp given all the traffic, where it takes a half hour to drive one block when everyone is coming in and out of courthouses and at lunchtime.

True... I'd still try to switch out to LI if you can to avoid the commute but I agree about the area... I worked in downtown Brooklyn for a while & there's a lot to do in the area & the courts aren't that far from the LIRR. Good luck!

Brooklyn jury duty
I was summoned to Brooklyn when I was 18 for federal court. They would not let me out of it for anything. My car ended up breaking down in Brooklyn on the second day, it was a nightmare. I would say take the train because you will have to pay for parking.

The subway is outside of the local courthouse (on the plaza, near Brooklyn Borough Hall), not the federal courthouse. When you exit the Court St station, it's a two block walk to the federal courthouse.
