so upset re: jury duty in brooklyn
i need to get out of this! (although i know it's interesting!) the timing and location stinks!
i know that if i was a SAHM i could get out but I work full time so my dd is in daycare but I don't know how i will make it to brooklyn on time after dropping her off or getting back to suffolk to pick her up before daycare closes? anyone have any advice to give me--i am getting really stressed about this! i don't even like driving in the city!

Do you live in the city or in Suffolk?
If you live in Suffolk, just show proof of your address and you don't have to serve in Brooklyn.

I don't think this is the case at all. I have worked with a lot of people who had to go because it was grand jury or something like that.
AND they lived on Long Island.
I answered on FHF as well, but on a related note, when I was waiting in Riverhead I met an older woman who said she also had to trek to Brooklyn once for jury duty. And she lived way out there by Riverhead.

If you do not have the option to postpone, you need to $uck it up and go in person.
A couple of my co-workers who were in this situation lucked out and only ended up having to go to actual court a few times a month so it may not be all that horrible.

Is it federal? They can send you anywhere for that. My friend in Queens had to trek out to Riverhead to serve.
If it's for NYC, you should be able to provide proof to get excused.

If its federal jury duty, she can be called to Brooklyn.

Do you have proof of service? Then you just need to provide it - I think you have credit for longer than 4 years though if you serve locally.
I was at jury duty a couple of months ago and they say people volunteer to serve locally so they can get out of Federal because the local (county) jury duty gives you longer time in between (and it's typically easier to get to).

Re: so upset re: jury duty in brooklyn
I was in that situation and was told that for Federal it's only a two year and not a four year time frame. If your summons has "SP" stamped on it, definitely try for a postponement. SP is special proceeding and you could get stuck on a jury for months.

Re: so upset re: jury duty in brooklyn
some of the federal judges in brooklyn are actually quite reasonable. if you get to that point, when the judge asks you questions, try to explain your situation.

Re: so upset re: jury duty in brooklyn
I would def try to explain your situation with your child's daycare. Just say its impossible for you to get to BKlyN & back within the time that your DC is in daycare...and that there is nobody else who can pick up/drop off. That should get you excused.

Re: so upset re: jury duty in brooklyn
i hate to say this but you can ignore it unless they made you sign the letter stating you received the summons. Things to get "lost" in the mail.

If you are working during court hours then there is no excuse. My DH just got his summons and basically there is no excuse for missing it.
I don;t know anyone who loves going but it is just something we need to do.

If you have a childcare hardship they'll typically dismiss you.
Or do what my mom did in 1985...showed up at the courthouse with my sister and I (4 and 6) in tow and was sent home immediately. Almost 30 years later she hasn't been called again

Re: so upset re: jury duty in brooklyn
FWIW, I work right near the fed court in Brooklyn. The LIRR is right there. Some days I would work until 5 and still get home in time to get the boys from daycare (when they went to daycare; now, DH is home w/ them).

It's stamped on in block letters right on the face of the summons (not in any particular place - like my 6 year old just took a stamp and stamp pad and did it anywhere). You can't miss it if it's there because I remember thinking "I wonder what SP means?" Didn't find out until I went I was just happy I got excused - after filling out this extremely long questionnaire, they didn't call me back in.
