Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?

While I live my life and certainly wouldn't be a shut in, if I had a kid no way in hell would I be taking them to a bounce house or any type of open play right now! Especially if they are just getting over being sick, that's just nuts!
This. I'll go run errands, to restaurants, etc but I wouldn't take DD to a bounce place (though I kind of sleeve them to begin with). We have avoided the museum, too. Obviously she still goes to daycare.
I had to go to a first birthday party today which I wasn't thrilled about but it's a close friend so I didn't have much choice. It was all finger food and DH said there were no serving utensils (he told me this after we ate it, of course) so I'm sure one of us is catching something.
ETA: I've also been religiously using a shopping cart cover when DD sits in a cart, which I'm usually pretty lax about.

I ask because DH and I were have a discussion about it this morning. I wanted to get the kids out to a bounce place because they are going stir crazy. I should add one of my kids just finished amoxicillin for step and his brother is on day 5 of the meds (2 out of 3 of my kids got strep within a week).
Anyhow when I suggested we go out, DH said to me are you nuts? With flu going around? It didn’t even cross my mind. My kids go to school. I get this is different. Just wondering what others are doing (not going out) if anything at all.
On a side note, I was listening to the radio and a dr. came on and said with Super Bowl parties, do not take anything from shared bowls-chips, dip, etc. because the flu is so bad this year!
Not to be a witch, but stay home. Build a fort or go in your own yard. Your kids aren’t 100% and will add to the funk that’s out there. This is why people are always spreading it and it’s not stopping. Stay home run the full course of meds and wait it out. Neither of their resistances are back to normal so it will make them sicker and then I turn will transfer to others. I’m not a nervous nelly mother but people are literally dropping dead three days into this. Perfectly healthy women /men and kids are dying from the flu. We really need to stop worrying about our kids burning energy and worry more about healing this crap. Strep can turn real quick and come back faster.

My DS went to a party at Pump it Up 2 weeks ago and I was SURE he’d be bringing home some germy souvenir after. Well. It’s been two weeks so if he should come down with something now ((knock wood he doesn’t)) it’s not from the party. I was seriously dying a little just watching the kids bounce around and get their mouths on the equipment and topple on top of each other.

Well that's good to hear! This party was in a bar and the only "activity" for the kids were a few of the birthday child's toys.....and the birthday child had the flu (confirmed by swab) earlier this week. All of the kids touched the toys, soooooooo yeah.

My older, school aged guy has been out and about but my 2 little ones have been pretty much sequestered to my house or family member's homes.

Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
Ooff! I was at urgent care (turns out I had strep and an upper respiratory infection after the flu) After I got out of the exam chair, I was putting on my coat when The nurse kinda rushed past me, and changed the paper on the exam chair. She starts to walk out as she ushers the new patients (a mom and teen daughter) in. Here I am, hoarse, coughing up a lung, and I'm chasing after her yelling, "aren't you going to wipe down the arms of the chair? I was touching it!" She just stared blankly at me, and I gave the mom in the exam room a look, as if to say, "ummm, wtf?" *gag*

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
Not really. My younger Went to birthday parties this weekend. One at a karate place and the other was at an escape room place. It really didn’t occur to me to keep her home. If she was showing signs of anything I would have kept her home

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
I haven't altered my life at all and never would have thought to. My youngest has a bday party at a bounce place this morning, had another party yesterday... I'm having a party for her in a couple weeks. If someone told me they weren't coming because they are afraid of the flu I think I would think that there's something wrong with them!
These kids are in school the majority of the time. If they are going to get something, it's probably going to be there. I understand that people have died from the flu but even still the chances are so so so slim that even if you come down with the flu that it would lead to serious complications or death. The chances that your kids gets into a car accident on the way to the bounce place and dies are way more likely than them getting the flu while they are there and later dying.

I agree with this. It's funny because nobody I know IRL has even mentioned anything about being afraid of getting flu or altering anything in their life even a little this winter. If I had a newborn, or a immuno compromised family member, of course I'd feel differently. But I can't spend the winter in hiding. Like you said- DD goes to school every day. Unless I home school her, she is most likely going to pick up something there. So far, knock on major wood, she hasn't been out sick once yet this year. Praying it stays that way!

Yes, with the exception of work and the grocery store, we’ve been hibernating at home. All of our friends kids have been sick on and off for weeks, so we’ve been keeping our 7.5 month old away

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
No we have not altered our routine at all. It isn't really possible - we can't stay in the house for the next 6-8 weeks. They have school. We have work. I'm not going to have them sit on video games all weekend. They have been going to sports, parties, etc. I'm definitely worried about the flu and make sure they constantly wash their hands etc. but my feeling is that if they are going to get it then there isn't much I can do to prevent it. School is a mass pool of germs.

No staying away from germs in general does not allow ones body to become immune. I still go everywhere. I wash my hands before I eat and try not to touch my face, nose and eyes.

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
No we live life as normal. My daughter just went to a birthday party at a bounce place. I made her wash her hands before she ate and hand sanitizer as soon as we left. They go to school and sit at tables and share supplies (so annoying) so I don’t think I can stop it. I wash my hands and teach my kids to wash their hands. I pray none of us get the flu.

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
My kids are at the age of competitive sports and we can't change their activities for the potential of illnesses. My older daughter dances competitively and her studio and one teacher specifically have been great about wiping down the barre and mats after each group and making them wash hands and use sanitizer when they cough or anything like that. My other daughter swims competitively and we go about our business. I am choosing not to go to the doctor for a non emergency visit with my daughter because I don't want to hang out in the waiting area with so many sick children and I'm also not bringing my kids to see my uncle in his nursing home until flu season is lessened. I feel like the majority of our life I can't change, so we just keep our immune systems strong through diet and supplements and wash frequently.

Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
I’ve been avoiding the gym and doing my workouts at home instead. Other than that, we are going about our normals lives, school, work, out, etc... But I’m constantly washing my hands (they are so dry now), using wipes on everything, reminding my DD to use the wipes I pack in her lunchbox and snack bag, not to touch to her face at school, etc...

Same.
We did slow down a little bit when it was freezing - the kids didn't really want to go anywhere but, otherwise, we've been doing the same things we usually do.
There's always something going around - a few years ago my kids were sick all July and were outside most of the time swimming.

The temperatures are keeping me inside more than the flu epidemic .
Same. DD and I are both vaccinated. I know that's not foolproof, but it's better than nothing. That being said, she's not even 2 yet so she's young for those open play places.

I’ve been busier than average recently. Not watching much tv or online. Didn’t realize the flu was any more of a thing than last year.
We are proactive. Don’t get the shot, but take daily elderberry, vitamins, probiotics, bone broth, lots of soup. HANDWASHING and when DD comes home instant clothing change. Also I’ve been bleaching my car and bathrooms often w wipes. Everyone has been fine, except a few weeks ago DD got her first stomach virus ever. Three up for about 12 hours on the heels of a school week.
Also I do not know anyone IRL who has the flu except my cousin who said she had it even thought her flu test was negative.

FIRST OF ALL -- CONGRATULATIONS@!!!! I have been on these boards for a few years and have always folowed your story--- I am thrilled for you!
And ya-- I took my DD to the library yesterday for a class (If i was thinking straight I would have opted not to bother to go). Anyway a little boy picked up something my DD was playing with and no joke coughed directly on it like three times. I did not take it from him and when his grandmother eventually paid attention to him and tried to hand it back to me - i said no thank you, he was coughing all over it. She gave me a look like I had three heads rather than apologize. I mean the kid was coughing and sneezing all over the place-- maybe you should have kept him home, or maybe you should keep an eye on him and tell him not to grab other kids troys. I should have given HER that look. Anyway, I am not a germaophobe but that was too much for me!
This is so me
I was so turned off.. I picked up my husband’s stuff from the cleaners the other day and the girl at the register sneezed into her hand before taking my credit card (with the offended hand...) I wanted to run out and just let her keep the card but in reality I held it like it was covered in cooties and didn’t put it back in my wallet for 2 days. This flu season is making us all nuts!
