general anesthesia for c-section
I have a friend who is having a c-section next week and was told she "may" need general anesthesia. She has some issues with her blood (platelets) but I didn't think something this serious. I want to be supportive. Has anyone experienced general anesthesia during child birth?

Not me, I had an epi, but I know 2 people who have. It's more common that you would think.
They woke up and were handed the baby. No additional complications.

I didn’t either, had the regular spinal. However I was extremely anxious and they told me they couldn’t give me any anxiety medication obviously but they said if I didn’t find someway to manage the anxiety or if I started feeling panicked liked I couldn’t breathe they would have given general anesthesia. It would be my last choice but honestly, as long as the baby gets here and is healthy that’s all that matters! :)

Didn’t they do this a lot pre 1980s? All I know is my mom had all of us and woke up with a baby in her arms. I would ask someone who is older.

Yeah I’ve heard of this too! If you are laboring naturally and for whatever reason an emergency c section is needed, if there’s no epi in, they may need to do this if they need to move quickly

Yes. My mom had both C sections completely put out. Back then there was no spinals. We both turned out fine so.....

general anesthesia for c-section
I didn't have GA, but with my first I was given something. I think like twilight anesthesia. I was not fully conscious, kind-of in and out I'd say. However, the only bad part was I was not able to hold my baby for a few hours after birth. I just wasn't in the right state, but he also had fluid in his lungs and was sent to the nicu for a few hours. I held him once I got back to my room. I feel like that kind of stole from my birth experience. But here I am 3 years later, with a healthy, loving child who is bouncing on my head as I write this. My second I had a standard CS with Epi/spinal. No issues or complications. I did skin to skin immediately while they sewed me up. Then nursed in recovery room. It was much more pleasant lol. But they're both happy and healthy. Tell her not to worry. We make plans / birth plans and the universe laughs.

general anesthesia for c-section
My sister did 14 years ago. My niece would only come into an angle hitting my sister hip bone. They tried everything to straighten her. She ended up with a general anesthesia. Not even a c-section. She had a regular delivery for my 2nd niece a few years later.

This is so, so true.
And while I was happy to be awake for my DD's birth, I don't think I would have felt all that differently about the whole thing if I had been under anesthesia. I just wanted her out safely and to no longer be pregnant!

general anesthesia for c-section
I had it. I had lap band and it messed up. I had to have a double surgery at 37 weeks to take baby and band out. The dr didn't want to do too types of anesthesia just in case. My husband had to wait outside the OR but they held my son up to the window and brought him out for a second for him to see. It was a bit sad that I wasnt awake but in the end, we were safe and healthy. I had a repeat c section in 2015 and was awake.

This happened to me. .it happened so quickly there was really no way to prevent it. My epidural didnt work and the contractions moved up to my chest and I couldnt breath...my sons heart rate plummeted and the next thing i heard was code blue over the speakers...and that was really all i remember. After I woke up, they wheeled me down to the nursery to meet him.
was def not my birth plan...but it is what it is. If my dr hadnt acted so quickly who knows what could have happened to my son.
