Might be TMI - regarding anesthesia and c-section
For my first pregnancy, I vomited several times on the table during my c-section. DH told me he remembers "someone" in the room saying that it interferes with the surgery and the baby? Now I'm scared because I'm having a c-section and know I will vomit again. I also keep forgetting to ask my doctor if i can eat prior - I think the answer is no. Any thoughts on this??

i can see how it would interfer with the surgery... think about how your abdomen feels after several boughts of getting sick.. your stomach muscles get a workout... they may have to put you out if that is the case... did you go into labor last time prior to your c section?? I know i tossed my cookies throughout the entire labor process last time which was a reaction not to the spinal but to the labor... so if you have a planned c then maybe that wont be the case? just a thought

Thanks - last time it was an emergency c-section. I did not go through labor, there were other complications that made my dr say that they had to do a c-section. I'm just so freaked about it and I don't know how to handle it. Can they really put you out?

Re: Might be TMI - regarding anesthesia and c-section
I was put out for part of my c-section due to some complications after the baby was already out. Afterwards when I came around I threw up also (I think twice) but it was just bile. I was scheduled for a c-section but my water broke a week earlyl. When I went to the hospital they asked me when I last ate and said they wouldn't perform the c-section until 12 hours from the last time I ate. Is was told though that throwing up is a common reaction.

Thanks for the info. Mine is scheduled for 9am, so I guess dinner is my last meal. I will have to speak to my OB about my vomiting issue!

Re: Might be TMI - regarding anesthesia and c-section
I had a scheduled c/s and heard that there was risk of vomiting and was nervous about it. My doc told me that if I started to feel nauseas to ask for something from the anesthesiologist so this is what I did and it definitely took the edge off. Hth!

Re: Might be TMI - regarding anesthesia and c-section
i can tell you a few things from my own experience...
1. yes you can be put out.... i had to be put out the second dd was taken out due to complications, they had to escort dh out of the room as well, soooo scary. the anesthesiologist told me in the begining of the section (because i was extremely anxious and having an anxiety attack) that he could put me out for the whole thing but dh and i both would miss her coming into the world so i sucked it up and stay awake... honestly it was a bad decison on my part i only say this due to the events that happened after she was out. next time i may take them up on the offer to put me out... or just ask them if its possible to give me something to clam me
2. i too threw up a ALL OVER MYSELF they had to change my gown on the table and everything. i had an emergency section due to my blood pressure. the anesthesiologist didnt want to do the spinal due to th fact it had only been about 4 hours since i ate last he said it had to be a min of 8 hours but her prefered 12horus. they had no choice and had to do it at 4hours. and well... i appoligist to all of good sam staff that was there that lovely day as they saw exactly what i had for dinner!

Re: Might be TMI - regarding anesthesia and c-section
I puked on the table when Alex was born and no complications, and true to form, I puked again when Yael was pulled out of me, and no complications - I never heard anything like that, and I even warned the doctor that I had puked the first time - after I puked on the table, he said I likely have a reaction to one of the medications they administer during the surgery.
And, even though I was SUPPOSED to have a scheduled c-setion, Yael came unexpectedly a week early - active labor started RIGHT after I finished dinner, and she was pulled out of me about 6 hours later. They do not like for you to eat before surgery but as long as a few hours pass in between it seems to be ok.
