Where would you retire?

Naples, FL

If we stay up north: Maybe a house on Candlewood Lake in CT or Lake Sparta, NJ

Where would you retire?

My DH thinks Delaware...

I want Paris.

I'm thinking more near my sister in NC.

Wherever my kids settle. I refuse to be the grandma that sends a card and a check for birthdays. I will definitely be pushing them to leave New York.

Me too. I have 3 so I hope they settle near each other. I also want to be Grandma that helps with child care because I know how much of a burden that lifts off of them. If they end up here, I won't mind snowbirding. I do love summers here.

My daughter settled in Alaska. I hate that her and the grandkids are there. But there is no way I could move there. The winters are brutal. Can get to 50 below. The days are short and dark.

It sucks for sure!

Where would you retire?

If I didn't have children Amalfi Coast or Taormina or Cinque Terra. Since I have kids it will depend on them, we will have a vacation spot somewhere regardless, my parents have one on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale and while I am not sure I would pick the same spot it is glorious having it to escape to

Probably right here in my then paid off house so I can actually afford to retire? I really don't know but I'd like to be close to my kids for sure.

I'd love west coast of FL. My husband likes winter so maybe snow birds. I also will want to be close to my girls and their kids so that will play a part

Re: Where would you retire?

i left NJ to be close to family. as much as i'm starting to dislike life in socal, it breaks my heart to think about leaving them again.

at the end of the day, my kid trumps them. if my son leaves the area, i'll be right behind him. i plan to be a very involved grandma... that's my dream, at least.

my dream:
* coastal town in the UK
* new england
* i want small-town living

Re: Where would you retire?

If we had nothing keeping us here we'd retire & move to California. I'd never move across the country from my kids though so it's not happening. Realistically we'll be in NY forever.

North Carolina area, give or take. Further south than LI, but not too far south. Still on the east coast. Much better cost of living. Not trapped on an island with only a few options to get off of it, especially during rush hour.

Pretty much this. Possibly S. Carolina too

Florida.
As far south in the state as possible. Most likely on the gulf coast.
Almost everyone we met on a recent trip down there had relocated there from NY or NJ and every single one said they would NEVER go back . They all loved it.

Most of my family and one of my best friends live on the gulf coast of FL. It’s like my second home at this point, I know it so well. There are some really great small towns with great vibes on the gulf coast. I’ve been to the east coast of FL (have family there too) and it’s a really different vibe there. Plus the gulf is always a lot warmer than the ocean Chat Icon

What are some of the small towns?

I am curious too.

DH retires soon, so probably somewhere down south a bit. Tennessee or the like. Once the kids are grown and on their own... a small apartment somewhere with a low cost of living, a big ass RV to travel the country, and some valid passports for traveling the world. I figure there is no guarantee that my kids will settle in the same state, so we realize we may have to travel between them. We'll always make it a priority to be right there for our kids for whatever they need, whenever they need us.

With the exception of Cinque Terra, I've also visited these places and dream about retiring there. I would also include Florence in the mix. Chat Icon

We will probably live part time wherever our kids are; hopefully they want to live close to one another.

So I could imagine living in NY and Carolinas or possibly NM.

For what it's worth, I think this makes you an amazing mother and grandmother... It sounds like you let your daughter live the life she chooses without making her or your grandchildren feel awful about it (even though I'm sure it tears you apart inside). Chat Icon

And dang, there is no way I could live there either. 50 **below**??? Fluck that!!!! I can't even tolerate 50 above without whining that it's cold! Chat Icon Does she enjoy it there?

I always thought Hawaii would be a nice play to retire. Nice weather, gorgeous scenery and it would be nice for people to be able to come and visit a vacation destination.

I think Hawaii is supposed to be one of the most expensive states to live in, even more so than New York.

Oh it TOTALLY is. They have to fly everything in, much like a Caribbean island, so even groceries are out of control expensive

Summers in the PNW... San Juan Islands, WA or up that way where it's gorgeous and peaceful and full of amazing water and wildlife (whales).

Winters somewhere warm, but reasonable, probably not an island because I like conveniences too much. :)
