Sahm back to work
I’m reevaluating my life. As from my pp I may be babysitting but that’s up in the air.
I just had a recruiter contact me about a possible career opportunity. I got laid off 2 years ago and have been focusing on my family for the past 2 years. I don’t know if I want to go back to my old career but the opportunity sounds very promising.
What wording should I use to explain what I’ve been doing for these past 2 years while I have not been working?
I might take the interview if I get that far but I’m so rusty.

I don't have any suggestions for you I'm sorry, but I'm in the same situation. I have wondered what I could/should say too! I'll be following, hopefully we get some tips. Good luck to you!

Re: Sahm back to work
I think you just be honest and explain it exactly like you did in the OP, unless you don't want to divulge any family info.
IMO, 2 years is really not bad at all, and you're probably not as rusty as you think. But if you think you may want to get back into your old field, I would try and do it sooner rather than later.

I agree completely -- if i was the hiring manager I would be interested as to why you left your previous position and saying you were focusing on your family is a valid answer. I would also want to know why you would like to get back into the working world/what has changed.

Sahm back to work
Thank you. I honestly don’t know if I want to go back to my old career. I think I’ll talk to the recruiter and see who the position is for since my industry was small and everyone knows everyone.
At this stage in my life I truly believe everything happens for a reason. I’ll see what happens.

Sahm back to work
I recently accepted a job after being home for 5 years. In my cover letters I stated that I took an “extended parental career break”. During my interviews I explained that I took time off to focus on my daughter. I explained my interest in the current position and we discussed long term career goals.

I would just be completely honest that you were laid off and took the time to focus on your family but you are ready to get back into the work force and confident you can pick up where you left off and get back to your career and want to focus on your long term family goals. I know it’s a gap in your resume but if we have anyone we interview, I personally as a supervisor think it’s commendable and an extremely tough job to be a SAHM. I don’t think it makes you less of a candidate I wish I could have afforded the opportunity to be home a bit!

Sahm back to work
I recently went back to work part time after 5 years of not working. Even now, my kids come first and I’m in a very flexible position. They understood/understand my kids were very little (they just turned 3 and 5) and I was home with them. Now that they’re in school/camp I have the ability to work while they’re there.

I'm sure it depends on the industry, but I would not mention your children at all. I would say you "took time off to care for family." No one is going to push further than that because it is illegal for them to do so.
I've interviewed tons of people over the years and I can only recall one woman explaining her gap by specifically saying she was a sahm.

Re: Sahm back to work
I was home for 6 years and went back to work. I said I was home caring for kids/ family. Doesn’t seem like much of a big deal these days. Good luck !!

Re: Sahm back to work
You can say just what you wrote in your original post...that you took time to focus on/care for your family. They shouldn't ask for any more details and most will know you were home with your kids for a few years

Really? I would think it's actually really common now. I just went back to work but in a different kind of circumstance as I already knew the person I am now working for so he knew I was a SAHM. I took 10 years off to be a SAHM. If I had interviewed I absolutely would have said I specifically took time off to have be a SAHM. I am very transparent thou and a 10 year resume gap would probably be hard to explain. I think if it's a woman in her 30s or 40s going back after a long break everyone would naturally assume it was because they were home with young children.

I think it’s really industry dependent. It isn’t common at all in my industry and in 10 years I’ve know one woman who didn’t return after maternity leave. You would think she packed up and moved to mars. Everyone was shocked. That woman I interviewed who was a SAHM didn’t get the job she wanted but we did offer her a lower level position, which she took because she couldn’t find anyone who would hire her with a gap. She was brilliant and lovely but it’s a fast paced industry and we couldn’t spend time getting someone in a management position up to speed.
Again, this is only specific to my industry. I know it isn’t the case elsewhere.
