Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
DH just switched to a new dr and got a physical. We've never had to go back to blood work results with previous drs. Always just got a phone call. Was told bc of HIPPA they can't give out info over the phone. Is this just a way for them to get paid more? Also a bit worried maybe the dr has bad news he wants to tell DH in person?

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
One doctor I used to go to did that. It was way annoying because I had to wait like an hour just to find out everything was fine
Now I see my results on a patient portal. So much better.

DW and I see our Dr. every 3 months, so unless there is something critical, we just get our numbers at the next visit. If there's anything of concern, they always call us to let us know, so it can't be a HIPPA law thing....

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
I just left a practice who held my results hostage for another copay. tried telling me my iron was so low that I NEEDED to see the dr because he wanted me to get some other testing for my heart (which they do in their office) I forced them to tell me over the phone and the PA who gave me my results said it was kinda low and he’d like me to go to a stomach dr for endoscopy to be sure i wasn’t bleeding with an ulcer of something. I was like this is wayyy to inconsistent. Went to new dr. He said it was a little low. TO take iron supplements and he re ran blood work before I even took them because the Original dr took my blood while I had the flu!!!
Everything was fine.
Crooks.
The current dr I see tells you over the phone. Unless it’s something serious that needs to be addressed (more blood work, further testing) , it’s a phone call and should be just that. They also have a patient portal.
ETA: the only blood results i had to go in for were HIV results when I went for IF treatments. That they wouldn’t tell over the phone no matter what the result.

Nope! That sounds extremely annoying. I get a mailed hard copy of my results and they are also entered in he patient portal so I can access them remotely.

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
Yeah come to think of it, I got my cancer diagnosis over the phone.
I told my doctor that when the biopsy results were in, to call me regardless of what it showed, good or bad. I didn’t want the stress of going into the office to hear whatever it was; the results were the results and I wanted to hear them on my terms. She was fine with that.
So I don’t think it’s HIPAA laws. It may just be doctors’ preferences.

I wouldn't go back to that dr. Who has time for that?! My dr tells me over the phone.

No. And if i don't pick up the phone, i had signed something giving them approval to leave the results on my vm.

My results are online. My dad constantly has BW done and he gets calls with the results. That’s very annoying!

It is absolutely not HIPAA. If something were seriously wrong they have to tell you. If you needed treatment for something they couldn’t say “oh well they wouldn’t come into the office!” That doesn’t hold up in court when they get sued for malpractice. I would firmly tell them you cannot come in and are happy to send them a signed release form.
I’m a huge defender of the medical profession but this is bs and nothing other than a way to make money.

I used to share an office with a nurse practitioner and my absolute favorite thing in the world was when she would call patients with good results and I’d hear the shrieks of joy from the phone. The flip side was obviously awful but she always explained what was wrong over the phone. She didn’t leave anyone hanging until they came to see the doctor, even if they were coming the next day. Any clinician who does that should lose their license. That is psychological torture. It’s inhumane.

I wonder if she complained to her insurance company if that would help? Because at the end of the day, they are also billing your insurance company for another office visit that is completely unnecessary. So I am sure the insurance companies aren't thrilled with this practice either. Wasteful

At most drs offices, you sign a lot of paperwork. One of those pages authorizes the dr to give results to you over the phone, email, a patient portal, whatever.
If he's charging you another copay, I think that's the dr's way of getting paid twice for 1 visit. I would move on.

There is a HIPPA letter for them to send you for you to sign if need be. If its not on the portal, they are faxed or emailed; usually per my request.

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
My endocrinologist does that. I nearly lost it on him one day when I came in and they made me wait almost 2 hours so I could see him and he could say "numbers look good." I told him it was insane that I had to do that and he kept saying they don't give results over the phone (there's a sign in the office as well.) I even told him "How about you charge me my copay but just freaking call me" and he said they can't do that. It's bull$hit! At this point though, I see him once a year and he gives me a prescription for blood work for the next year and I just do it the week before my scheduled appointment so its not an extra appointment anymore.

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
Honestly, insurance companies need to start cracking down on this and denying payment for bullshitt office visits like this. Then it would stop.

Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
Yes. My old doctor didn’t but then changed years ago and had you come in. To me it’s all to get another copay from you... my close friend is a doctor, legally, they HAVE to call you if there is something wrong with your blood work if you don’t come in. So I don’t go, I’ll check my patient portal and if there are any results out of normal range I’ll call

You're right. It really is psychological torture! Dh went for the physical and bloodwork in the first place bc he is very bc concerned that he may have a serious medical issue, and we've been waiting patiently for the test results...just to now have to wait another week and half. Its maddening! I Googled it and found out that he might be able to see his results on the Lab website where he had the bloodwork done. So we will try that for now and hope we can make sense of what it says!

Well the upside is that if there was something really seriously wrong, they wouldn't make you wait a week and half for an appt to tell you about it. So there's that.
