Unexplained infertility

Hi everyone,

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a year. We are both 31 years old. We have tried 3 rounds of IUI (intrauterine insemination) (May, June, July 2018 with clomid. We had a chemical pregnancy following our May IUI, and the next 2 were unsuccessful despite matured follicles and confirmed ovulation. My AMH is 2.71.

We had an HSG this July (2018 that came back normal. DH (dear husband) sperm analysis came back great and all my Bloodwork and sonos have been normal. I have regular periods. I’m wondering if anyone has/had a similar profile and got answers? Should I switch doctors at this point? I feel like I should be getting pregnant at this point. Thanks in advance!

You will get mixed answers here....i was told i was a classic case of "unexplained infertility", turned out my issue is egg quality, but also after doing my own research i have found there are many other underlying issues that not all cookie cutter REs believe in. Good luck!

Thank you for replying! What other issues could there be?

In the grand scheme of things, 3 IUIs is not a lot. It's generally recommend you do 6 before moving on.

When you did IUIs, did you have multiple follies? When IUI was successful for me, I had 2 or 3 follies.

I’ve read that after 3 the success rates decrease but I’m not sure how accurate that is. I had at least 3 mature follicles each time.

After 3 IUIs I would move on to IVF if possible. I'd do a max of 6 IUIs if you wanted to keep on trying that.

this was me. I was 30 when I had my first IUI that actually worked! at 35 I did IVF to try for another one and with all my tests coming back perfect, I still failed two rounds. Egq quality not so good. There is no test to determine that unfortunately.

however, you might want to have some further testing on immune issues, MTHFR mutation. These are all factors that can be at play.

For me, i found out I do not make enough progesterone so when I got pregnant with IVF I couldnt sustain the pregnancy. I also dont make enough estrogen. My Dr' had a really hard time getting my #'s to rise on the stim meds (when they had no reason to believe it would be a problem).

I work with a holistic dr now in balancing all these things and supporting my hormones. You may want to look into a naturopathic dr who specializes in fertility. (www.naturopathic.org) in conjunction with your regular treatment.

Thanks so much! Would MTHFR mutation come up in genetic testing? My husband and I both had genetic blood screenings and nothing came up.

Re: Unexplained infertility

DH and I were unexplained IF. We did 3 IUI's and I got pregnant on the 3rd IUI (it was our first injectable cycle - I didn't get pregnant with clomid). Unfortunately I miscarried at 10 weeks and when I was cleared to try again, we did a 4th injectable IUI cycle which was negative.

At that point, I was ready to move onto IVF. I was very lucky and we got pregnant with twins our first IVF cycle. My dr. told me unexplained IF usually has a 50-50 shot of IVF working. I said 50-50, that's it??? He laughed and said those are great odds.

Anyhow when my twins were 8 months old, we got pregnant (on our own without trying) with my 3rd.Chat Icon My husband was like where the hell are we putting all these kids?Chat Icon

I went back to my RE while I was pregnant with my 3rd because I was really curious after reviewing all my testing, bloodwork, egg quality, semen analysis, etc. if they could find a reason why we didn't get pregnant all that time and then bam out of nowhere. They reviewed my entire file and said no you really are unexplained IF. On paper there is no reason I shouldn't have been pregnant. So I guess my answer is I never really got any answers. LOL. But it all worked out. Hang in there!

I had it specifically tested for by my naturopath when she ran a food allergy panel. it was one of the options offered with testing.

I think any dr can ask for it to be run, but not sure if its part of a standard panel.

Re: Unexplained infertility

I was diagnosed with unexplained secondary infertility.

We conceived my DD after 4 months of trying in 2013 when we were 29 years old. She's 4 now. We started trying again in June of 2016 when we were 32 years old. I am always regular and I ovulate regularly. We used OPKs and Deanna's plan. We tried for a year before going to an RE. Once we started seeing an RE, we did all the tests and everything always came back normal. DH had no issues, my tubes were open and clear, everything always looked ok. I did have polyps & had to have a hysteroscopy to remove them but that didn't help me conceive either. We tried 3 rounds of IUIs with Clomid...never got a positive even though I had multiple follicles. I switched offices and then went straight to IVF. I got pregnant on my first IVF SET, which was a fresh, day 5 blast. I am now 9w4d.

We never got a reason for the infertility. My RE said that after you try for a year, you only have around a 1% chance of conceiving on your own without any treatments Chat Icon. I am so thankful that our first transfer stuck Chat Icon

If you are not comfortable with your dr, then I'd make a switch. I did not love my first RE or the way the office was run. I am glad I found a new office and went straight to IVF. For me, I felt like the IUIs were a waste of time but I know they can be successful for some patients.

Good luck to you! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
