Car Seat confusion....
Please help me figure this out. I have an almost 2.5 year old (she is tall and skinny...I think she's about 36 inches right now and 27 lbs) and a 10 month old (who was a preemie but is slowly catching up at 28 inches and 20 lbs -- he likes to eat whereas my daughter does not!). Anyway, the 10 month old is still in the carrier seat, but really needs to be switched to a regular seat. DH thinks that we should give the 10 month old my daughter's current seat, which is a Britax Convertible click tight, I believe, and buy my daughter a booster....does that seem right? She's only 2.5 years old - aren't boosters for older kids?. I read that the Britax booster says ot can be used for those at least 2 years of age...but is it safe?....but I'm so used to her convertible seat that it makes me nervous....and I'm wondering if I should just buy another convertible for him....am I wrong in thinking about the booster? What am I missing....

Re: Car Seat confusion....
Your 2.5 y/o needs to continue in a convertible carseat (5 point harness) and your 10 month old needs a rear facing car seat (if you want him out of the carrier).
My daughter is 5.5 and I still have not converted her car seat to a booster.

We just dealt with this issue. We moved our 1 year old to my older son's convertible seat (switched it to rear facing), and then bought my 3.5 year old a 3-in-1 seat that works as a forward facing harness, a high-backed booster, and a backless booster (we got the Graco Nautilus 65 DLX 3-in-1 Harness Booster). My older son is 41 inches tall and 35 lbs, and according to the seat he can be in the harness until he's 49' or 65 lbs. so I plan to keep him in it until he reaches one of those, and then I'll switch to the booster function.

No, she's definitely not ready for a booster seat!
There are many kinds of seats. You may be interested in a combination or all in one seat that will last her from now until she's out of seats/boosters entirely. Right now she needs a five-point harness. Eventually (think 5 years old) she will be ready for a highback booster with either a 5-point harness or a seat positioning belt. A backless booster is last.

Re: Car Seat confusion....
Ok -- right, so my husband was looking at ones that I think are like that -- you still have the 5 point harness etc. When it's in that function, are they as safe as the convertible?
ETA-- not just a straight booster, but a convertible booster I guess.....right?

I definitely say something like the graci nautilus- a 3 in 1 seat would be great for her. Now, and until she’s done with a seat my DS is 7.5 and he’s still in a graco nautilus, using the car’s seat belt. Maybe in another year or so, we’ll convert it to backless booster mode fir him. But it’s a great seat that works really well for different ages (I’ve my 18 month old nephew in it, too...

That sounds like a convertible car seat. We have the Graco 4Ever and that converts from rear facing infant seat all the way up to backless belt positioning booster. It describes the foward facing car seat as a "forward-facing harness booster" but really it's just a car seat turned to face forward.
ETA: DD is about the same height/weight and is 2y3m.. she's in the forward facing graco 4ever.

if you don't want to rear face your 2.5 year old any more you can get a harnesses booster seat which is like a convertible but you can not rear face it. This is what I did when I had my second granted first was a little older but she was forward facing so it made sense to get a harnesses booster. We got the Britax Frontier its expensive but I love it. At 7.5 she still uses the harness
ETA: min. Age to move your child forward facing should be 2 and they should move to a harness till at least 5

its not a convertible because you can't rear face it. A convertible car seat which is what the graco forever is can rear face. A harnessed booster can only be put in forward facing so you can not use it for children under 2

Right, so I guess I'm using the wrong terminology then...she's currently forward facing in her britax convertible seat (she was in it rear facing before) -- so my son will get that seat and go rear facing, while my daughter will get the Harness Booster that will eventually convert to a high back booster and then a backless booster....right? And I guess my question essentially was is the harness booster ok for a 2.5 year old....which it seems to be based on the posts. Just want both my munchkins safe and wanted to be sure I wasnt short changing her i.e. she must stay in the convertible seat front facing at this time. The harness booster is sufficient .....

yes the harness booster (which is also known as a combination seat) is perfectly safe
