Sometimes I just feel like a failure
Long story short, we bought a new house. Sellers left bedroom furniture in one bedroom. Not really our style but it was nice and in great condition. Our realtor and friend happened to mention that if we ever wanted to get rid of it, his wife would love that style. We have been overwhelmed and crowded by the task of unpacking... and we decided to give him the furniture. 2 days later my daughters old Bobs dresser breaks-2 drawers broken. I just feel like an a$$. I gave away expensive furniture when I could’ve just kept it for her. We’re living on 1 income and I should’ve just known better. I feel like a fool

Hindsight is 20/20. You had no way of knowing and it's not your fault. You did something nice by giving it away so hopefully karma will come back and reward you for that.

That doesn't mean you are a failure...it just means you had bad luck. Stuff like that happens to me all the time! I chalk it up to Murphy's Law

Re: Sometimes I just feel like a failure
just bad luck is all. check your local fb market groups and see if anyone is giving away or selling cheap their furniture. you never know what you may find.
also, how old is bob's furniture? maybe there is some recourse with them.

Sometimes I just feel like a failure
Don't feel like a failure. It's just the black cloud that comes with buying a new house. Seriously, something ALWAYS breaks when you buy a new house. It's just hard when all of these extra financial situations occure. It 's not you, though.

i don't know what juju it is, but this! something ALWAYS goes wrong and/or breaks right after you buy a house.
i would look at it like this... thank goodness it was the furniture and not something crazy like the furnace or roof. when we bough our last house, the dishwasher took a shitt, followed by a clogged toilet that ended up costing me an arm and a leg.
in other words, you are NOT a failure. i hope you're able to start enjoying your new home real soon!

Re: Sometimes I just feel like a failure
Also, can your DD's dresser be repaired? I feel like my DH can fix anything.... 2 dresser drawers shouldn't be too bad to fix.... How badly are they broken?

Re: Sometimes I just feel like a failure
Ugh that sucks!!! But it's not your fault!!
On another note- there's a secondhand furniture place on Northern Blvd. in Queens and I've gotten some great deals there. I got a small table for my kitchen with 4 chairs and a huge 4 piece solid wood wall unit for $200 total. There's a few nicks in the wood, but for that price and the quality, you can't beat it. I also got a loveseat and armchair set for $150, almost brand new and when I took it home the tag was from Bloomingdales!
Link.
They also post a lot of their new inventory daily on FB and Instagram: Facebook.

For that place they do not deliver, not sure if they have someone they can recommend. My DH, BIL, and FIL own a flooring company so they were able to pick everything up in their work vans.

There is also St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Shop on Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park. They always have old furniture.

Re: Sometimes I just feel like a failure
An unforseeable problem, you def are not a failure.
Sometimes when things go in a downward spiral, it seems like things like this magnify and we feel like we failed. Its just a lot of stuff piling on. You've had a major change (for the good!) so it's overwhelming.
A good friend of mine used to say to me "will you even think of this in 10 years? in 5? in 1?"

Sometimes I just feel like a failure
If that's your definition of "failure" I'd never want you to meet me!
I don't know how old your DD is but a child doesn't need an expensive dresser. Get her something pretty in home goods or pier 1 and call it a day.

Re: Sometimes I just feel like a failure
I think everyone has done something similar at one time or another. I had left an envelope with $300 in cash on the counter. My husband "helped" me clean up and threw the open envelope away. Yeah, that sucked. We had just had a baby that month and money was so tight back then (eleven years ago).I cried. We were supposed to use it for a stroller, and I had to get a really, really inexpensive one instead because we could not swing the more expensive one that the money was supposed to go towards. I feel you.hugs.
