I think that its going to make Nassau even MORE like Queens because people who are priced out of the city will be moving east. MORE overcrowding.. MORE congestion... MORE traffic. I cannot wait to get off this island.

This is a natural occurrence of urbanization. Queens used to be like nassau. Nassau used to be like suffolk.

But in all seriousness, what makes you so certain these people will move to LI? LI is not the only suburb. They can go to Westchester, Rockland, Jersey, southern Connecticut. They can go to eastern Queens, they can go to the Bronx, they can go to Staten Island. LI isn’t the only game in town.

Also, you weren’t the poster who said this, but LIC and the surrounding areas are quite gentrified. I was at a rooftop party in LIC over the summer and the 2 bedroom condos were going for nearly $1m. I feel like there are VERY few parts of the boroughs that aren’t gentrified at this point.

My DH works for the LIRR and he was telling me that areas of Brooklyn previously perceived as "bad neighborhoods" like East New York and Flatbush are now totally gentrified. He was at a meeting for work the other day and next up is Jamaica. He said a whole upscale condo complex by the train area is in the works. Where are all the middle class and low income families in these areas going to go?

The only reason I'm not thrilled about Amazon is because I feel like it was just another power play by our Governor. The only person that guy cares about is Andrew Cuomo. Amazon will be getting huge tax breaks and I'm certain there were many greased palms during this agreement.

They are moving into the Citibank building that has been there since the 80’s. Citi has been moving people to its downtown location in the city. The impact will be minimal. LIC has been up and coming for awhile and that will continue. I am not a huge fan of the tax breaks they were givin but that’s pretty standard these days.

Have you noticed all the high rise luxury apartments that went up in the last year? My nephew just moved out of LIC, he was renting a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment for $5k a month. It's the Williamsburg of Queens!

Because historically people from Queens tend to move to LI and people from the Bronx tend to move to Westchester.

You have a very one sided opinionated view of things based on your own experience. You hate Long Island but to many it is a BIG step up from living in Queens. I, personally, don't know one person that lived in Queens and wanted to stay there. I went to a city school and knew a lot of people that grew up in Queens. Only one of them still lives there and he is single with no children living in Forest Hills. You could not pay me a million dollars to live in Queens. To me, Queens is a filthy, overcrowded mess with mostly horrible schools. To each his own though. That's why I live on Long Island and not Queens. It always confuses me why you live here and not Queens. Just go back! And if you can't afford it, like you said, there are plenty of other suburbs!

I totally disagree w this, maybe some areas of Queens but not mine, my friends who moved ALL did so bc they could not afford a house. prices are insane in my neighborhood at this point but none moved to L I by choice!

My point is we are all working with a relatively limited sample size. You can't make generalizations about the entire county of Queens based on each of our own very small experiences. The people who are moving to my town could certainly afford to stay in Queens. Most of them are moving from areas like Flushing and are paying $2+ million for homes on Long Island. They are moving because the schools are better, the houses are bigger, and they can get property.

I am sure there are people that are forced out of Queens because their area became too expensive and there are other people that want to leave Queens because they want a different life experience. Queens is huge and there are all different kinds of people living there. There's no one size fits all. In fact I think that Queens is the most diverse area in the world. To think that everyone there feels the exact same way is absurd.

ITA that to think everyone there thinks the same way is absurd, not sure where in LI you are but not all schools in LI are superior to city schools. in fact many schools in certain districts in Queens are far superior to those in some areas of LI, again depends on district itself

I am in a very highly rated school district. I also think that the problem with the city is that if you don't place into one of the really good high schools you are probably going to a high school that is not that well rated. Of course there is no one size fits all for which high school is best for which student.

I'm really just responding to the Long Island bashing because it's getting old. We get it, Queens is great, no one from Queens would ever voluntarily live on Long Island and they have already begged, borrowed and stolen to stay in Queens but have still somehow managed to end up on Long Island so that they can continuously complain about how much they hate long island and would rather be in queens. It's just getting annoying listening to it over and over and over.... Try New Jersey! Maybe it's better over there for all of the Queens Refugees.

No one on here was bashing LI. That’s another thread. Saying that there are people who would beg, borrow and steal to stay in Queens is not bashing LI. It is an observation made by people who were born and raised in Queens who are very familiar with the culture and social climate there. The original question was whether or not anyone thought that Amazon setting up shop in LIC would impact LI and the answer, from people who are VERY familiar with Queens was no, we did not think it would.

You then proceeded to say that you were concerned because your neighborhood was being “infiltrated” by people from Queens, like we’re a bunch of witches coming to steal your children. As if that wasn’t ridiculous enough you then informed us that people from Queens were coming to your neighborhood to buy $2m houses. That was your response to a fear about people being priced out of Queens and having to move east. At some point you also called Queens filthy with horrible schools because you went to school with people who lived there.

There is a distinct difference between bashing somewhere you’ve lived and bashing somewhere people you went to school with lived. If you look through the LI bashing thread, you’ll see that most (maybe even all) of the people doing the bashing have LIVED on LI. Whether or not they’re from LI is irrelevant, they have invested their time and money in living on this island at some point. YOU have never lived in Queens.

I also want to say that given your description of where you live, you are not an example of a typical LIer. Most of LI does not live in $2m homes. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, I think it’s great that you are able to have that lifestyle but it is not a lifestyle afforded to the average person and therefore your experiences are bound to be different from most other people.

the exact quote was: I don’t think there are as many people clamoring to come to LI as you seem to believe. I mean, almost everyone I know lives in the city and trust me, they’ll beg, borrow and steal before they’ll move out here.

Before they MOVE OUT HERE. I assume that "out here" means Long Island. It didn't say move out of queens - it implies moving to Long Island. That to me is saying that you would rather beg, borrow or steal than live on Long Island. correct me if I am wrong?

Also, where did I say I was concerned? I never once said I was concerned. I was just stating some observations about the people coming from Queens that are moving to my area (not even necessarily my town). They are all lovely people and seem to really like living here. If they all moved here and then complained incessantly about being forced to live here, yeah, that would be annoying.

I don't think that there is a "typical" LI experience. I think we have all different socio-economic groups, ethnicities, religions etc. I know people from all of those groups that hate long island and love long island or are nuetral.

Also, given that you have never met me, how would you know if I lived in Queens? I actually dated someone from Queens for four years and spent the better part of that time at his house in Queens. So I would say I know Queens pretty well. Not to mention both of my parents are from Queens so I have had family in Queens since birth. But yeah, I guess I would have no idea about Queens.

Just like you can have your opinion about LI I can have my opinion about Queens. I am not sure what the appeal is - I always find it odd when people here are talking about how they would give anything to go back, because you couldn't pay me to live there. However, this is the first time I opened my mouth about it because I actually think it's really rude. I would never move down south and then make friends and tell them how much I hate it there, I was forced to move there and I would give anything to move back even if it was how I felt. But that's just me.

Re: Amazon HQ in Long Island City

I mean really, some of the things being said on this thread are just horrible and offensive. People getting worked up about Queens people moving into their territory. Queens people are infiltrating LI? I guess that's a slightly better choice of wording than infesting. And lululu why are you getting so worked up over luckystar's opinion of LI? Why are you taking it so personally? Did she shit on your lawn? If you love LI then what do you care how she feels? And having family and friends who live in Queens is NOT the same as having lived there yourself. Maybe your description is accurate for the areas in Queens where you know people, but not all of Queens is a shith0le. Just like you feel you couldn't be paid to live in Queens, believe me there are a lot of city people that feel the same way about LI, and there are a lot of them that reluctantly moved there because they can't afford the millions it takes to stay in the city. Complaining about the traffic on LI is as pointless as complaining about the snow. It's NY, snow and traffic is part of life here. Do people think if they collectively complain about these things it'll spontaneously turn into Florida? If it affects you so negatively and bothers you so much, YOU can always move away too!

Also, how/why did you go to a city school if you didn't live in the city? Was it a private school?

But I can't imagine ALL their employees relocating, kwim?
I mean unless you have a very high paying job, the average worker isn't going to want to uproot their lives and move.
Some will of course, but I feel like a lot won't.
I know myself, I wouldn't uproot my life, disrupt my daughter, etc for a job unless I was some high paid executive in the company.

I agree. They might be able to get the top of the ladder to come for the right price and then maybe the younger workers who think it’s cool to come to NY, though it’s not like they’re out on a farm somewhere, they’re in Seattle. But the majority, probably not especially since they’re just going from one big city to another.
