Need help: How much to charge a friend to watch her child
I'm a SAHM, and my good friend is about to have her 1st child. She goes back to work when the baby is 6 months old. I will have the baby 2 days a week from 8:30 - 4pm (8 hrs). I am happy to help her out, but have no idea what to charge her? Any thoughts or opinions are welcome and appreciated. FYI, my kids will not be home while the baby is here.

Re: Need help: How much to charge a friend to watch her child
since it will be off the books i probably wouldn't charge more than what a daycare would charge. Day cares cost about $325-$360 a week for 8-6 so i would base my number on that.
ETA: i know my opinion will def. be the unpopular answer but i personally feel what people want to charge off the books for babysitting a kid esp. at their own houses are absurd.

Thanks for the reply. I will def not be charging her as much as a daycare, no where close.

Need help: How much to charge a friend to watch her child
My old babysitter i paid the following:
1 day: $12/hr 2 days:$150 3 days: $200 4 days: $250 5 days: $300
I would probably say 100/week for a good friend?

That’s a tough one. Part of me wants to say somewhere between $10-$15/hour off books for a good friend but still to make it a job for you.
Realistically, it is a balance of what she can afford and what you need to make to make it worth it. After taxes, she should be able to put away some $$ after paying you! Most of my paycheck goes to my sitter now... but when all of mine did, I actually quit work for a while.

This is what I would say, too. I couldn’t see charging a good friend more than that.

I know nothing about daycare costs to compare, but I would ask for at least $150 for the 2 days. That's a lot of work for you, especially when the baby starts walking.

because it's a friend i would just do like $50/day with the expectation that she provide all meals, diapers, etc. for the baby

I agree, no less than this. $50 a day is so low, that’s $6.25 an hour! I would be resentful after the first week.

Need help: How much to charge a friend to watch her child
My daycare charges 275 for a 5 day week and for an extra 5 bucks a week the provide diapers. Thats 56/day. I would ask for 50/day and she provides diapers and other essentials.
When I paid a friend to watch my daughter it was 10 per hour which would be 80/day in this situation. It’s a tough call since she’s a friend you want to give her a break but it’s still a lot of work and you don’t want to short yourself either...

50 dollars a day seems SO low for a newborn. Its less than a daycare, yes, but she's getting one on one attention. I don't think 50 dollars a day would be worth it for you.

This. I pay $200/week for 4 days, 8 hrs a day. That's about $6/hr.

The way the OP described, it sounds like to me it is in fact a favor. Maybe I'm misreading, but "happy to help her out" and saying she won't charge "anywhere near" what daycare would gives me the impression that she isn't looking at it as a job.
OP, I think it's very nice of you to help out your friend. She is lucky to have you!

I agree 100%
If you see it more as a job and feel you will become resentful because of that then i would be upfront about it now. You are a mom and know how hard it is to watch children. I'd ask for whatever you feel will make you feel good about it.

I'm going to say at that age - maybe $100 a day?

Minimum of $50 a day. Personally I would ask for $60 a day plus she provide diapers, wipes, toys, snacks ect... I think it is better to start a little higher now because you dont want to have to ask for a 'raise' later on.

I see what you're both saying.
Guess I'm just thinking back to when I did this for 2 different friends. Yes I was helping them out but I still considered it my job and it had to be worth it for me. At the time I got $9/hr but that was at least 6 yrs ago.
OP, just be sure it's worth it for you. If you don't want to charge anywhere near what daycare would charge, it seems you would be charging less than $6.hr. Which sounds crazy to me. I had no idea they charge so little. But you know what's best for you.

Re: Need help: How much to charge a friend to watch her child
If I were to help a friend out with this, to me that is a favor. It is not a "job" where I expect to be compensated as a career. She is probably hoping to get a break on the costs which is why she reached out to you in the first place as opposed to going right to a daycare setting.
For me, I would actually not charge a friend to do this, but that's just me. I understand other people would want compensation. I think if that's the case, $10/hour would be fair.

Need help: How much to charge a friend to watch her child
When my son was an infant, 7 years ago, I paid $7/hr to a licensed in home daycare, that paid taxes. They still charge the same amount today. Currently I pay a local woman $10/hr to come and watch him before and after school.
Charge what you are comfortable with. There is no right or wrong answer.
