Anti Vaccination _ thoughts?

Everyone that can vaccinate should. There should not be an option. People need to vaccinate to protect those that are medically fragile and can not take the vaccinations.

My honest opinion:
I do not have a medical degree. I do not stare into petri dishes and microscope slides for 8+ hours per day.
And unless you do, you do not have the qualifications to determine whether or not this is right for your child. Nor do you possess the right to spread these diseases via your unvaccinated children.
They're not going to conduct human studies, so you can throw out the notion that there will be viable stats published based on a scientific study.
I believe that we should trust the medical community and what they know. Not some junk blog/website. the AAP and JAMA publish findings and studies.

You mean Jenny McCarthy and her quack of a doctor are not reliable sources to be listening to?

Yes. I was reading about this earlier apparently she spoke out years later and it turns out her son does not actually have autism.

As far as testing for medical risks associated with vaccines. I read that there is some bloodwork that can be done to determine if someone is at risk for vaccine injuries. Arizona is discussing legislation that would require doctors to perform these tests if patients want it. I can’t imagine what the cost would be or if it would be covered by insurance.

I personally do not know anyone who has not vaccinated. I work in a field where I do review medical records on a regular basis, have only come across one parent who chose not to vaccinate. I honestly didn’t think it was very common at all, and was surprised by my pediatrician’s email, hence my post. I am fascinated by this whole anti vaccinator thing but also concerned...

Just out of curiosity, how many adults here also get their titres checked and vaccines updated?

I have had most of them updated, but I really need to get the chicken pox one because I never had the chicken pox.

I’m all for vaccinations. Most doctors are as well.

I have a son with autism and we vaccinate.

My one sister does not vaccinate her kids. She claims religious exemption. She thinks it causes Autism. Meanwhile, her kids have developmental and mental issues already. Cuckoo

I did recently when I was pregnant. I did need a booster for rubella or something. Once I gave birth they gave it to me in the hospital.

ETA: My cousin is autistic and was vaccinated. His mother is a nurse (L&D) and does NOT think vaccines were the cause and vaccinated her other children and is an advocate for vaccines in general.

My child was exposed to the measles at 5 months old. As a result, she needed extra shots, was quarantined for 28 days, and is still not eligible for the mmr at 14 months.

Anyone who chooses not to vaccinate their children should also not be allowed on airplanes, schools, malls, or anywhere really. Stay home.

I know someone that doesn’t vaccinate. They told me there is mercury and monkey dna in the vaccines...

I also have a close friend whose child had cancer. Her immune system was wiped out so all the vaccines she previously got were no longer in her system. Her mom stresses out about her going to indoor play places or even school because of anti vaxxers. She will vaccinate her again once she’s in remission long enough.

I vaccinate but I spread them out. I never do more than 1 or 2 in a visit. But my children are caught up before preschool.

Crazy and reckless in my opinion especially after knowing what my friends daughter went through.

Really?
And honestly even if there was, who cares? I have a friend who had a heart valve replacement and has a pig's heart valve in him. He's fine. Hasn't started rolling around in the mud or anything yet. Chat Icon

What kills me too is people so so worried about putting things in their kid's bodies, fluoride, vaccines, non organic foods.
Then those kids grow up, go to college, do keg stands until they practically have alcohol poisoning, smoke pot, do God knows what other drugs, eat fast food, drink Red Bull, etc etc.
Hysterical.

Anti Vaccination _ thoughts?

The autism-vaccine link has been disproved time and time again. The British doctor who wrote the paper fabricated the data and lost his license. There was never any link. It was all a sham.

The most disgusting part is the amount of money that went into disproving the link. Money that could have been used for real research, money to provide resources and supports to children and their families. Who knows what progress could have been made? Its despicable.

He must have thought he’d get away with it. Which he did for a pretty long time. This was in the 90’s, in Britain, when oversight wasn’t what it is now.

Why do you delay vaccines?

The CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics don't just make up the schedule. It is based on scientific tests about when vaccines are most effective, and they make sure that vaccines given together have no interaction. Even by delaying vaccinations, you're putting your child at risk of getting the disease and increasing their risk of side effects to the vaccine.

I see tons of people on LI say they spread out the vaccines, but there is no medical reason to do it. It is using the same logic as anti-vaxxers. I don't understand the medical mechanisms of a vaccine, but I feel like my child shouldn't get more than 1-2 at a visit, so I'm going to substitute medical recommendations for my personal feelings on the matter. It might not be as dangerous as anti-vaxxers, but you're still choosing to put your child and those who can't get vaccinated at risk.

People also delay based on toxin overload, that it can be a lot for little bodies to take in all those heavy metals, etc, all at once.

Well, I "spread them out" I guess. Like a few times there were 3 they were due for. It just seemed like a lot of stuff to put in them at once. I asked if we could do one of them separately and they told me which ones they thought would be good first and then, maybe a few weeks later I'd come in to do the other. I also wanted to have a little better idea what it was from if they did have any reaction. They never did and we were never more than a couple of months (if one was sick or or something came up) behind.
ETA - the doctors had no issue with it nor expressed concern. They just said it was more for me since we'd have to bring them back in again.

Anti Vaccination _ thoughts?

I delay vaccines. I feel like it’s too much for them all at once, but all of my kids have had reactions to shots-fevers, lumps at injection sites that last 4-6 weeks, etc.

It also frustrates me that the suggestion is to give more vaccines than are required for the vast majority of people instead of checking titters.

Do you have any actual medical evidence that any of this is real? This sounds like doing a juice detox to get all the toxins out of your body. No actual scientific basis, but it sounds good, right?

It's one thing if you child has actually had a reaction to a vaccine, then there might be a medical reason to space them out. But doing it just because you THINK it's a lot for their bodies is not an actual sound medical reason for it. It's putting a child at risk because you think you know better than the medical professionals who created the schedule based on scientific evidence. Most doctor's will acquiesce to a modified schedule because you're at least vaccinating your child, but that doesn't make it medically sound.

We space them out too.. at the advice of our doctor. I really don't care what people think either, its my child. - I am pro-vaxx but I also don't believe my 4 month old getting 5 shots all in one sitting is necessary.
When my ped and I spoke about delaying the schedule he would say "ok lets do 2 today and these are the 2 I feel we should do now. The other 2 can wait for next visit".

Delaying vaccines due to reactions is absurd. If your kid is going to have a reaction, they’re going to have a reaction regardless.

I have never met a doctor, nurse or any person employed in the medical field who didn’t follow the CDC recommendations exactly for their own children. Not a single person. This is a group of people who have more access and understanding to the information than anyone who graduated from Google school of medicine. And all agree with the recommendations. Interesting, no?

ETA I meant to say for their own children. Those in the medical field, in my experience, always follow the CDC recommendations with their own children.

My ped felt strongly about not spacing them. I am not sure he would flat out refuse, because I didn't ask to space them, but I have heard he was very against it.
When DD had to get her MMR and Chicken pox vac at the same time, I asked if I should be concerned about doing both at once and he explained it as- both are live vaccines, both viruses will build up in the body at the same time and both reactions (like mild fever, mild spots) will occur at the same time. It won't be any worse or any harder on her body than doing them seperately and putting her body through it twice.
I felt very comfortable with that- seeing as he went to med school and I did not- and she was fine.
