diabetic birthday

My brother is diabetic and his 50th birthday party is next week in another state. I'm not much of a cook/baker so I'm not sure what would be ok for him to eat as a dessert. I'm hoping a store has some type of simple birthday cake but I haven't been able to find one that's sugar free and low carbs.

Anyone have any suggestions on a place that can do this or a simple recipe that would be appropriate?

Re: diabetic birthday

Does he like cheesecake? I can get you a simple recipe that DH makes for himself. No sugar, very low carb. DH eats pretty much like a diabetic so...

It's actually pretty delicious too.

Do you know that he specifically eats sugar-free or low carb diabetic desserts? Many diabetics prefer regular dessert, but just eat it in moderation and adjust their insulin for it.

I've been diabetic for about 35 years. My ideal birthday cake would be a steak with a candle in it... Chat Icon

Not sure - all I know is that my SIL is very insistent about it being sugar-free and low carb. He's stopped eating desserts so I can see your point about just taking a small portion of a regular dessert, but I don't want to rock the boat with her. :)

And Nell - yes, I'd love the cheesecake recipe!

I'll get you the cheesecake recipe when DH gets home later, no problem.

And I can see why SIL is insistent. The worst thing is to be spiking your blood sugar and playing with numbers and injecting extra insulin just to eat a sugary dessert. Not worth it.
I wouldn't be taking chances with my health if I were diabetic to be honest.

This. My dad has been diabetic for over 50 years (type 1) and eats regular cake on his birthday.

My aunt is diabetic and we usually have sugar free cookies on her birthday (I have always been able to find these at a bakery).

Re: diabetic birthday

Have you asked him what he'd like?

In all honesty, my choices for a birthday dessert would be:

Regular dessert and just take extra insulin
Non-dessert food (meats, cheeses, etc)
...
(fill in a long list of things here...)
...
Nothing at all
"sugar-free" desserts

And not all "sugar free" desserts are good for us. It's a labeling thing sometimes. Honey, sugar alcohols, other variations on sugar, don't count as "sugar" on a label, but he would definitely feel it.

How long has he been diabetic? If it's recent, then he needs to be more strict than if he's lived with it for many years.

Does he want everyone to make a fuss over his diabetes? Often, I don't want people making a point of the fact that I'm diabetic. Especially at a party for me.

Well-managed diabetes isn't taking a chance or guessing at how much extra insulin to inject. My dad has lived with diabetes for 30 years and knows his body better than anyone. When he was in the hospital a month ago (for a non-diabetic issue), he would tell the nurses how much insulin he needed based on what he had (or hadn't) had to eat that day. There's not a lot of guessing for a small piece of cake.

Re: diabetic birthday

For whatever reason her SIL is asking for low carb and sugar.
Maybe he has issues we do not know. Maybe it's doctor's orders.
Maybe he chooses to live sugar free.

If he wanted to have a regular cake, I'm sure his wife would have specified that.

Here is the recipe.

This is delicious. And to Goldenrod's point, you won't be making a big deal about his diabetes because everyone can eat this- it's that good.

We don't use splenda- but you can sub stevia, monkfruit whatever. Or you can use Splenda as it calls for

Lemon Cheesecake

I can see why it tastes so good. Look at how much fat is in there! Chat Icon Chat Icon
I would eat that, though. The ingredients look tasty.
Most sugar-free stuff uses fat to compensate. It's not like he's eating it every day, so indulging once a year isn't going to cause any harm.

I'm going to show this to DW and see if she can't make some once in a while. Chat Icon

Yes! It's keto, so...fat is their friend!
LOL
In fact one of the books he read is called- Eat Fat, Get Thin. Chat Icon
But DH lost over 100 lbs eating like this and kicked his insulin resistance so.... Chat Icon
But yeah, for the average person, it's a once in a while treat.
For a diabetic, it's the perfect once in a while treat because no sugar.

Thanks for the recipe! I wonder if I can use something other than almond flour b/c my son is allergic to nuts and I'd prefer not to have crumbly bits of it around where he can possible come in contact with it.

ETA: I just searched keto desserts and there are a lot of options for him out there. Maybe, since keto is the in thing right now, it won't be hard for my SIL to find something that will satisfy them.

He has used coconut flour before- not sure how it compares consistency wise but it might work
