I am 100% in agreement with this. But I can't imagine the uproar this is going to cause in the anti-vaccine community.
You wrote my exact reaction.
What are those who just flat out won’t vaccinate do? I’m guessing it pertains to schools the most... they can’t possibly keep unvaccinated people out of public spaces in general bc that’s insane. But I can see needing records for school - which would mean more home schooling and possibly new ideas of private / religious schools? I doubt the yeshivas are going to follow
Curious and concerned all at once
The bill doesn't pertain to public spaces just schools. If this is really about the safety of our children how come they don't check the vaccine records of teachers, bus drivers, coaches etc? It would make more sense to start there. I would be more concerned with how corrupt our government officials are. Shortly after Cuomo signed the bill, Ilum Health Solutions, a subsidary of Merck announced it will be investing 48 million in Albany. The bill was actually dead in the Assembly Health Committee at 13-13. Sayegh was basically strong armed to change his vote.
Alot of the children affected are ones with disabilities. This can affect our districts in many ways. They are entitled by federal law to a free education. The NY bill is so poorly written, it was not though out at all. This can potentially cost our districts alot of money. I guess we will see how it all unfolds.
But isn’t having a documented allergy/disability (and unable to be vaccinated) different than a religious exemption? Isn’t this bill only affecting those claiming religious reasons?
Yes, of course.
I am curious what disabilities prevent someone from being vaccinated?
There are kids that have been vaccinated and had did not react well. They make up a great number of families that are non-vacxinating.
That’s not a disability.
A child having a reaction to one vaccine doesn’t exclude them from having all other vaccines. It excludes them from having boosters of the vaccine they reacted to.
I am not looking get into a debate. I am referring to kids with IEPs.
So you are inferring that the "reaction" is them getting Autism from the vaccine?

New York state ends religious exemptions for vaccines
In response to the PP that mentions teachers being up to date on vaccines, we absolutely have to be. I teach in a Catholic school, we all have to have the tithers test to check our immunity. I ended up needing Dtap & MMR boosters.

That’s not true. Myself and four immediate family members are teachers. Not one of us had to show immunity, get boosters, or even have a flu shot. Even as a teacher I’ve only had the flu shot if i have a baby under one at home.

Ok, well it is true for my school, I'm not making it up. I've heard the DOE doesn't even require yearly TB tests- which is absurd. I have to get one of those every year as well, as well as show proof of an annual physical. I guess it is only a private school thing.

Like I said previously, it was brought up on the assembly floor (you can look it up and listen), it is not a law. Your employer can still require it.

No actually they won't, but I'm sure they will propose legislation soon.

It would be safe to assume that is the next step if vaccinations are required for children in order for them to attend public school, than the adults teaching them would also need to be vaccinated

It has nothing to do with children with IEPs.
There are some children with auto immune disabilities or genetic syndromes that could have reactions to the vaccinations. More medical disabilities, not autism, adhd or disabilities like that.

Yes
It affects more than just ppl with a RE. It affect us all whether u vaccinate or not. Because of this bill, u will have to adhere to the current vaccine schedule which means ur kid will have to get his/her shots on time, u cannot space them out, u cannot have him/her only have 1 vaccine at a time, AND ur kid will need to get any new vaccine that the government decides that need to be added to the schedule without asking the parents’ opinion, as for right now, like a PP mentioned, there’s a bill for the flu vaccine and the HPV vaccine (for kids born after 2008 -and they’re trying to push starting with 9yr old kids) that are waiting to be voted for. If u don’t agree with these vaccines, thanks to s2994 (the bill that many ppl in this thread seem to be happy about), they’ll be added to that schedule ur kid needs to adhere to and u cannot do anything about it. If u don’t like it, ur kid won’t be able to go to school, how can anyone be happy about something like that???

Agree! I was a teacher as well and I never had to submit any immunization record of any kind, the subject was never brought up. I taught in elementary, middle, and high schools.

I would just watch closely as this progresses. There is a Senate bill S298A which would add the gardisal vaccine to the mandatory schedule for children born after Jan 2008. Most families I know are against it. Call your Senator, find out their position and let them know you oppose it.

I totally agree with the above. Anyone who would support this is very short sighted and a bit naive. This is a very slippery slope of taking away our rights as parents to decide what is in the best interest of our kids.
I would be surprised if this does much of anything to solve the problem they are aiming to fix. The large communities that are not vaccinating for religious reasons are the issue here and I doubt they are going to start now. They will homeschool or find another option.
I can’t see any positives to this - it’s actually downright scary.

Re: New York state ends religious exemptions for vaccines
I work in NYC schools and they have never asked me to provide records of my vaccinations. I am allergic to multiple vaccinations. The measles outbreak has been a terrifying ordeal for me because I have autoimmune issues as well. My doctor did check my titers but I am constantly worried. I was thoroughly impressed by Mount Sinai hospital in Union Square. They take extra precautions when coming in to make sure you are directed to the right area based on why you are coming in.

Hospital for Special Surgery has signs up that say if you have not been vaccinated for measles you may not enter the hospital for the safety of their patients. I'm not quite sure how that's enforced but I was glad to see it.

Re: New York state ends religious exemptions for vaccines
I have taught in the NYC schools since 2005. I am pretty sure I did give them a copy of my vaccination records when I first started teaching. I remember having to ask my mom for the copy. I am pretty sure I needed a physical for this job and the doctor had to fill out the vaccination records that I brought with me. I was also tested for TB?? I believe and giving a shot. I am working at a camp this summer and they required a physical and my vaccinations records. I have to be given the shot again and was tested again.

New York state ends religious exemptions for vaccines
I have worked at 4 different NYS public schools. Only one required me to have a physical upon accepting my position. None have requested official vaccination records.

I worked in NYC school district and they required vaccinations...
I worked in a pediatrician’s office in Queens when I was in college and we had adults call all the time for copies of their immunization records because they had gotten teaching jobs so the DOE definitely required this ~10ish years ago.

The point it that it is not a law, certain disctricts may require it though. I am certain not all teachers, teachers assistants, bus drivers, coaches need to provide it. Like I said go ahead and review the assembly floor footage. It was brought up and stated that it is not required by law.

Exactly. Teachers don’t have to be up to date, but the children do. However rest assured they’re coming for the teachers next.

There is NO real thing as a medical exemption in NY state. Doctors are put before a board if they dare to write them. This is why parents WHO VACCINATED their kids who are injured must still comply.
The STATE has a right to deny a doctors medical exemption AND then the doctor “gets in trouble”.

I'm not sure about bus drivers, but teachers and coaches do have to be vaccinated. Every school I ever worked at required it, medical documents, vaccinations, etc.
This Is absolutely NOT true.
