Keeping my kids home until flu season is over

Can you take kids out of school for flu season?

I'm only half kidding.

It's one kid after another with these icky illnesses.

The kids at school aren't instructed to wash hands before lunch, only after recess.

Half of my kids class is out due to illness, teacher had the flu, teachers kid now has the flu - it is everywhere.

Seriously though, has anyone heard of hiring a tutor for a letting a kindergartener stay home until flu season is over? Chat Icon

Re: Keeping my kids home until flu season is over

It's like this every year though.
I'm very fortunate that DD has the immune system of a horse and hasn't been sick with anything bigger than the sniffles in over 2 years now.

But at the end of the day you can't protect them from everything. If you home school them they will get sick out at a restaurant, the supermarket, the mall.
The flu isn't just limited to school.
Do your best, give them the flu shot, send them with hand sanitizer in their lunch box and tell them to use it, wash hands when they get home etc.
As much as the flu sucks, it's not Ebola. If they get it, it will suck for a few days but they will get over it in a week and life goes on.
Unfortunately getting sick is a part of life that you really can't avoid.

Kids get sick. Everyone gets sick. The more they’re exposed to, the better their immune system will be in the long run.
If they don’t wash hands, just pack an individual wipe in their lunchbox. I get them on amazon subscribe & save for pretty cheap.

I’m such a germaphobe so I get it lol. Every day I throw an antibacterial wipe in my DD’s classroom snack bag and lunchbox, and she has hand sanitizer in her school bag. We wipes or hand sanitizer every time we get back in my car after running errands (shopping carts are the worst).

Re: Keeping my kids home until flu season is over

No kids but I feel this way for myself. I stay in and away from large public gatherings during these crazy outbreaks. My hands are dry, cracking and bleeding from washing so much. I work from home, so I get away with not HAVING to be in public. Even when DH is sick, I move into the guest room and clean the house constantly.

When I get sick, it lasts for like a month or more because of fibromyalgia. Any sickness causes a flare and they can last a while. So I avoid any and all sickness.
DH had to go for some testing, which made me have to work at our business where 2 people were coughing and sniffling away. LYSOL LYSOL LYSOL everywhere and I thought I avoided it. Then sadly we had to put one of our dogs down and the unimaginable grief must have lowered my immune system to zero because 1.5 days later, I think I got everyone’s sickness all at once. I have no voice, I’m so congested and my throat is killing me. I made it to the end of January before catching anything.

Avoidance is key for sure.
I’m gonna start wearing a mask and gloves in public IDGF

My kid was constantly sick in NY. I don’t think her school was allowed to use any type of antibacterial anything. Now living in NC, my daughter has been a lot better. Her teacher wipes down the desks and actually uses Clorox wipes... can you imagine?!?

Keeping my kids home until flu season is over

I live in Florida now and the flu is running rampant down here. My friend swears by giving her kids Olly Multi-Vitamins with probiotics. She buys them in Target. Says her kids have not been sick since taking them. I've been giving my kids elderberry gummies daily. I plan on getting them the vitamins this week.

That’s not enough hand washing for a bunch of small kids. My DD’s teacher has them washing hands constantly.

Sorry your daughter is sick. Elderberry & Oscillinocusnium sp? is great to avoid the flu. My younger daughter had it last month and me, DH & DD1 started elderberry and oscillinocinuium and were able to avoid getting sick.

Keeping my kids home until flu season is over

The flu is TERRIBLE this year. Last Monday, we were sent from PM pediatrics to the ER at Cohen's with one of my 4 yr old twins. Her oxygen levels and her BP were very low, fever was 104. Luckily we were not admitted, but she still isn't 100%. Last night her twin sister was diagnosed, and on Friday my 6 yr old was diagnosed. God help us.
I hope your little one feels better soon!

Our friend's grandson was just diagnosed with the flu, hoping the younger one doesn't get it. DH and I were just at their house last weekend, and this weekend were out with out friends. So, we were exposed ...... hoping our flu shots work.

I am seriously considering getting a face mask for my commute on the LIRR. People are disgusting.
I refuse to ride the subway, and now there are two cases of coronavirus in Flushing, which is not that far away from me.

Re: Keeping my kids home until flu season is over

Flu season typically falls sometime between the start of fall and the end of spring. So, it's almost the entire school year. I think Flu season starts roughly when all of the kids go back to school, and start spreading it to each other.... Chat Icon
