Getting tested for Coronavirus

Does anyone know the real requirements to get tested for Coronavirus?

I am frustrated since there seems to be no standards.

My dad most likely has it. He started with a cough then fever. His dr wouldn’t send him in to get tested and the hotline to get an appointment said cause he didn’t know of anyone specific that he came in contact that had it they wouldn’t send him to be tested. To me this is stupid how is he supposed of he was out if some stranger has it.

This was about 2 weeks ago. As the days went on he got worse tired achy and tightness in chest and becoming winded his dr basically said he has but won’t send him for testing and unless it gets really bad not to go the hospital.

My mom is immune compromised so now I have to worry for another 2 weeks to see if she has it and see how she will react and won’t be able to get tested.

Yet I am reading online how people with mild symptoms got tested??!!

ETA : my dad is on his way to feeling much better.

I believe you have to have fever and SOB maybe diarrhea too. Not sure. The Gov just is talking now about getting everyone tested to see who has it and who doesnt.

Praying for your dad

I think from what I understand that the ones who got tested with only mild symptoms had been in definite contact with a positive case.
So someone at your job tests positive, you get symptoms- albeit mild- and you qualify to get tested because of your contact with a positive case.

I just saw a few messages saying the AFC urgent care centers are testing at their sites now. There’s one in west Islip that i was alerted to.

I’m glad to hear your dad is feeling better !

I'm glad they are getting these rapid tests rolled out. What I think would be very helpful would be a blood test to determine if you had it already. I think that will be a game changer in terms of everyone being locked up. My whole family was sick right before the lock down period started and I think we may have had it. I would love to know if that is the case.

Getting tested for Coronavirus

You just have to operate as he had it. Getting tested and knowing for sure won’t change how you should act regarding quarantine etc.

I live around the corner from the Farmingdale location. It’s a shot show ever there. Police are now there along with news crews. And it’s in the same lot as a supermarket

This is something I have been trying to understand. What is the difference if someone is tested or not. There is nothing they can give you to make it go away. So if you think you have it, assume you do and stay quarantined. What is the benefit of knowing you have it for sure?

Exactly. I think people want and need to know for sure before they change their life. Right now, people are just staying inside. If they "know" they are sick and have to actually stay away from people, then it's real and they have to legitimately quarantine away. Hospitals, even if they test you and you're positive, can only treat the symptoms.

If you think you have it then you have it. Stay away from others, you don’t need a test.

I know the peace of mind would help but honestly these tests aren’t even 100%.

Basically everyone should be acting like they have it, symptoms or not.

Re: Getting tested for Coronavirus

I think the main reason people want to know if they have it, is to know once they are better, they can retest and if negative, they can go about life (that’s if you can’t get it again)

Scientists seem fairly certain you cannot- at least not the same strain. Most of the chatter I've heard is that it will be similar to the flu in the way it mutates- again though there is a lot of unknown so no one can really say for sure.

Re testing- I know doctors in large, well funded hospitals who can't get tested. It's a disaster.

I'm wondering the same thing. I keep hearing about how it is mutating into different strains, like the flu does. That's why there isn't lifelong immunity. One you've had it, you're only immune to that strain of the virus. So even when they develop the vaccine for it, we'll still be dealing with it yearly along with the flu.

Probably not. I think if you are positive they assume you are free of it and not contagious anymore after a certain number of days. Probably like 14 days

We are ordered by the county Department of Health (in Rockland) to stay home for 7 days after the fever subsidies I believe. I think it’s the same for DH at work.

It’s crazy - someone I saw 2 1/2 weeks ago just died today from it. Thankfully I know others too who have recovered.

My parents have been operating as they have it. Haven’t left their house. I have done their shopping picked up their meds etc and drop them off at the door.

The reason I wanted to know is right now they are saying once you have it you should be safe and it would be a nice to know if they did have it and recovered I can worry less about them.

I guess that makes sense but still think it’s kind of crazy they won’t approve someone to be tested when they show all the symptoms but don’t know for a fact that they knew someone who was exposed!

Can't anyone just say they were in contact with someone that tested positive. How can they check?

ETS: And who's to say I could have be exposed from a stranger and not know it. So I can feel like I have the symptoms been exposed but not know it. I mean I'd just say I was exposed so I could be tested.

I agree. You could easily pick it up from a stranger and have no idea.

If you need to check symptoms, you can use this website. Our insurance company recommended it as a symptom checker.

Getting tested for Coronavirus

This whole thing is a mess. In the beginning I heard how you have to test negative twice before you’re cleared to leave quarantine. Now I’m hearing all sorts of different recommendations on when to return to society. Someone just mentioned 7 days fever free, I’m hearing 72 hours fever free. What if you never had a fever?

Then this nonsense with refusing to test people! You can be asymptomatic and have it or have very mild symptoms. I know someone who somehow got them self tested two weeks ago with no fever or real symptoms then I hear about people with every symptom in the book and the doctor won’t test them. I know numerous people who recently went to the doctor with fever and respiratory issues and were told it’s bronchitis, sinus infection, ear infection and weren’t tested. This is why our numbers are through the roof.

And don’t get me started with them refusing to test kids, even ones with fevers. I’m sure tons of kids have this and are spreading it around but we’d never know because most have no or very mild symptoms.

My 5 year old was diagnosed with Pneumonia yesterday. The Ped said that it is possible/probable that he also has the Corona virus but he doesn't meet the criteria for testing. We were given meds for the Pneumonia and sent on our way.
