Trampolines

Whats everyone's opinion on trampolines?

I have 2 very active boys....almost 4 and 7...

we went to a cousins house last summer and they loved it...but I always hear how dangerous they are.

I am on the fence...just curious if anyone has one or has had a bad experience with their kids...

i go back in forth. I think homeowner insurances goes up when you have one so i have not gotten one yet


i let my DD go on my neighbors and of course she got hurt and hurt her ankle not terrible but she was banned from going on after that cause it was cheer season and I couldn't risk her being out from injury on a trampoline

that said I still toy with the idea of getting one. But it def, carries risk of getting hurt on it

It's definitely a liability. I have a swimming pool and get nervous leaving the kids unsupervised even for a moment. They are almost 11 and almost 9 now and both very good swimmers.

My boys love going to the neighbor's house who has a trampoline, but there's a lot of rules.

Honestly, if I didn't have the pool I'd consider it more, but I already go nuts when the boys have friends over and they are horsing around, playing or wrestling in the pool.

My friends just got one that has a basketball net with it and looks fun. As long as the kids understand the rules and you supervise I think it's fine.

We have one for my 7 and almost-4 year old. We got it a couple years ago, and it's been great. They get so much exercise in it and have so much fun. I always keep an eye on them to make sure they are giving each other enough space so they dont bump heads or hurt each other. I think as long as it is used carefully and under adult supervision, it's a great way to get some energy out. Ours has little clasps that can be used to lock the zipper opening of the safety netting so they can't go in it when I'm not outside watching them.

I like the idea of them but I’ve heard horror stories of broken bones etc. I would not be comfortable with my kids on one unless I was fully supervising so I could intervene if they weren’t using it in a dangerous way.

I would say they're too young. My friends daughter fractured her leg and messed up her knee when she was 3 IIRC. I think the AAP says no trampolines for kids under 6. I wouldn't get one yet. We don't even go to trampoline parties. DS hurt his leg at the first one we ever went to, luckily it was just a sprain, but that was enough for me to say no more.

Maybe it's just me, but I still get pain in every bone I've fractured. Even my pinky finger.

I know kids love them, they are great exercise, parents are cautious etc. If you are going to get one-please keep these 2 things in mind:

I listen to Doctor Radio on XM. They have consistently expressed strong opinions against them. It is not falling off that is the problem. Orthopedists claim it is the force of another kid bouncing that causes injury - so...

1. If you have more than one kid on, make sure they are fairly equal in weight.
" Heavier users create more recoil of the mat and springs and greater upward impaction forces than smaller users can generate on their own. These forces must be absorbed by the falling body and can be larger than landing on solid ground.The risk associated with weight differences in the participants, in combination with less developed motor skills, likely contributes to the increased risk of fractures and dislocations in younger children."

2. Injury to someone not on trampoline.I knew the family when it happened- a little one ran under the trampoline and got a concussion when the kid on the trampoline was jumping.

It's a hard choice when the kids really want it. Mine wanted one, and I decided against it. Good Luck.

My niece had one. One big wind storm not that long ago and the thing went flying across the yard. Just missing the house. (It even had cinder blocks holding it down)
I'm glad it broke because she loved it.

I have a son with Autism, so we got one when he was 5. He is now 13, and it broke a year ago, and never replaced it. We never had an issue. If people came over, we just told them it was off limits, and didnt have anyone complain. He has a lot of sensory issues, so for us it worked well. We noe have a swing and a pool, so he doesnt miss it.

As an attorney, I immediately shot it down when my FIL brought it to my house last year. I did not want the liability and your homeowner's goes up if you tell them about it and if you don't, they disclaim you if you get sued. If a kid gets injured and needs surgery, it's worth a 6 figure settlement. No thanks! I have 3 boys so I didn't need a crystal ball to see that in my future.
