Also serious question... I definitely want my kids back in school. But for everyone saying open everything up ASAP...have you seen your older relatives? Parents? Grandparents? (Not in a social distancing situation) I just don’t understand the logic between wanting to be out and about, have our kids in school when we don’t even feel safe having our parents come over to our house, or go over to their house.
We see them now, we see just about everyone now. They are over it, we are over it. There is more of a chance of us dying in a car accident, than dying from the virus. I don't see anyone selling their cars.
I don’t care what anyone’s point of view is but we have to stop making that comparison. It’s completely unrelated in so many ways and just sounds foolish.
Why? I'm confused as to why it is so different and sounds foolish. And I am not being snarky.
Car accidents are not contagious They don’t overwhelm Hospital systems They aren’t growing at exponential rates with very limited understanding of how or why
If those were true—many people most certainly would give up driving.

Whenever anyone, online or in real life, says that they believe this or that or predicts this or that, I always want to know their credentials or at least see the numbers or statistics that they're working with. We are living through a true disaster/emergency. Like so many generations of our ancestors have before us. I don't know anyone who doesn't miss the beautiful life they had before this. Anyone who isn't grieving some loss. Anyone who isn't anxious about the future. What I can't understand is the rage and railing against those qualified to uphold public health. The contempt for science and scientists and doctors that I see in some of the propaganda circulating. The rage at people who are informed by science and scientists as they make decisions that are necessary and informed by real data provided by real experts.
I completely agree! It baffles me that people disregard science and statistics because it's not what they want to hear. The idea is that we slowly re-open so that we don't have a dramatic increase in cases again and overwhelm hospitals. That is why there needs to be certain ICU capacity, testing capabilities etc. for us to begin re-opening.
I haven't heard anyone say that we will be forced to socially distance FOREVER. Likely some sort of distancing will be in place until a vaccine is developed which scientists are actively working on and testing.
With regards to original poster I heard an interview today which referenced that testing needs to be done at higher volumes for schools to open. They said that in Germany kids in schools are tested 4x week.
Scientists can make recommendations about science. Economists can make recommendations about the economy. Policy makers, ideally, will weigh the information and consider both when making decisions on our behalf. Nobody benefits from a Great Depression.
YES! Thank you. This is so frustrating!!! Every one of you on here saying listen to the scientists - are you really that narrow minded???? I don't get it!!! This is so frustrating. Do you have absolutely no clue as to what is happening with the economy???? Why are you not okay with anyone taking a risk of getting COVID but you are completely okay with people dying of starvation, abuse, poverty, drugs etc. PLEASE explain this to me.
I understand the economy. I studied economics. Our economy isn't bouncing back from this if we start to reopen today or in 2 months. This event has changed several aspects of how people will make and spend money. Of course I'm not OK with people dying of starvation. For that reason we have government programs that provide resources like food stamps and not for profit organizations that run food banks. I have yet to see any reports pertaining to number of deaths from starvation as a result of the pandemic.

THANK. YOU. Not to mention that no matter how much foot stamping goes on, a reopening that results in large scale reinfection will decimate the economy. There is no quick fix to this.

There are a LOT of not so pleasant aspects of this shutdown that are being conveniently left out of news reports.
This is happening for the same reason, IMO, that I have to watch the SAME three children laying in hospital beds every day for the past week.
It's easy for most of us to say "there are government programs to help you if you're desperate", but as we've all seen just from experiences even just on this website, those programs are not working the way they "should be", nor are they working AT ALL for some people. How many more months should thousands starve?
There are scientists and medical professionals who say there are safe ways to start opening up NOW. Not all of them are brainless quacks.
If we slowly start to expose people to the virus over the next three months, by September the risk of a massive spike *should* be much lower because many people will have had it already and developed antibodies. And if it's true that you can get it over and over again, then we will spike in September, or January, or 2030. So what are we accomplishing by waiting?

100% agree! The time to open is NOW, not later. At some point, we are going to have to face the music anyway. Staying shutdown is delaying the inevitable and in the meantime, it's crippling people's livelihoods and businesses.

That's the thing. If it's going to spike when we open- which of course it is- I don't think anyone thinks it won't- what difference does it make if we open today or 6 months from now? The only difference is that 6 months from now the economy will be even worse off. What is a longer lock down going to do?

When you say you studied economics, you mean that you were an economics major at the college level? Or that you took one or two economics classes?
The longer we stay shut, the longer it will take to recover from this and it is exponential. I don't think anyone is saying that we should reopen the economy with no precautions however the metrics that they are using might not be appropriate for every region.
Furthermore, undocumented workers can not get food stamps or any government assistance. People who were not paying taxes and working odd jobs like housekeeping, nannying, landscaping etc. do not qualify for unemployment or a lot of the other government assistance.
I actually met a woman last night who runs an organization that supplies many of the food banks on Long Island. She said the situation is dire. Lines for food banks a mile long and not enough food to supply them.
There is no great solution but for those people thinking those of us that want the economy reopened are just "stomping our feet" like children are completely narrow minded. Obviously we all know how dire this situation is, we are just choosing to look at it from more than one angle.

Someone said here it was to bring us closer to treatment or a vaccine. Neither of which could ever happen. So...like it or not, we will have to eventually learn to live with this virus. SCIENTISTS have said that. But those scientists are apparently idiots.

Yep. Reopen - stupid, selfish people. Extended lockdown - brilliant humanitarians.
Typical partisan lockstep. No room for variety of thought on a complex issue.

ALL of this!!
If you studied economics then you should understand that the longer this shutdown continues the greater the impact to the economy, people's individual finances, the housing market, small businesses and on and on and on and on. There will come a point of NO return where bouncing back becomes a pipe dream and another depression is our reality.
It absolutely without question matters if we open now OR months from now. If we open now there are small businesses that might be able to save themselves and people who will get their incomes back and save their homes and put food on the table. The fact that you think WHEN the country opens is irrelevant with regards to the bounce back shows a lack of understanding of the monumentally dire effects this shutdown is having on our country.

Re: What do you think schools should do if someone tests positive COVID?
For those who are saying there are government programs like food stamps, food banks, unemployment etc - its not working. Thousands of people have lost everything in two months, next will be their homes like in 2008.
Food banks are running out of food, there is a shortage of supplies. Stores aren’t donating as much as they used to because they are trying to save supplies for consumers. People are waiting on line for hours to get turned away because they run out of food. Public assistance isn’t easy to get on normal circumstances, I’m sure the system is overwhelmed.
They ran out of money within the first few weeks for business loans. Many of the small businesses got screwed on that end. Unemployment is so effed up, people are still waiting for it since March. These are regular hard working people who had income and were supporting their families. Now have nothing. I won’t even get into the immigrants who are severely suffering - like hair stylists, construction workers, nail technicians, small business owners etc
Don’t think for one second people aren’t starving and the government is just saving these people with their programs because they aren’t.
Like I said before, I saw this first hand with two families. They were so excited about getting food, the kids were crying. And one of my close family members waited on line for hours to get canned sardines. This isn’t fake news.

The programs in the US are horrible. I agree with that. But I think reopening too soon is going to cause more problems. They really need to do it every two weeks and see how the numbers are, and if it starts getting worse, then they need to restrict a bit. That’s what they are doing here.

I have not heard one person on here say let's reopen everything at once. EVERYONE knows we need to reopen slowly. But we aren't reopening at all. We are waiting for metrics that may not happen for another couple months. They also aren't giving us any information on how school will be handled, because this was such a fire drill for everyone and no one knew what to do. That makes me angry - there are schools like Chaminade that were prepared for this. They had practice "Learn at home" days a few times a year so they would know what do to. Teachers and children could go right into it. That's how the state should have been - PREPARED.

Car accidents are not contagious They don’t overwhelm Hospital systems They aren’t growing at exponential rates with very limited understanding of how or why
If those were true—many people most certainly would give up driving.
I shortened the quoting so it won't take up the entire page. The fact is that car accidents (despite not being contagious, not overwhelming hospital systems, and they don't grow at exponential rates) still have an equal or greater (depending on your age range) chance of killing you than this virus. If anything, you could say car accidents are actually more dangerous because even in the absence of those factors, the chances of dying in a car accident are the same or greater.
In all actuality, after this is all over and they have a greater understanding of this new virus, I'm sure we're going to see the mortality rates of this virus are a lot lower than they're even being estimated at now (which is already significantly lower than the original reports). In which case, if you're one of those people saying "this virus is the end of life as we know it" and "life will never be the same", you should probably sell your car and just stay home for the rest of your life to avoid all the remote chances of being killed.
Actually, there's a small chance you can just die from a freak accident at home or during a burglary, I just don't know how people are going to exist like this. How do we get all those numbers down

I get what you are saying. The whole country was not prepared. TBH, I think the US is waiting to see what happens in China and Europe first and they are basing it off that. I have been following a map from the Robert Koch Institut and I have been following what is rising and lowering Link .
I’m going to hazard a guess that NY is seeing what happens and will decide from there.
That being said, I had a meeting this morning, and they are throwing around the ideas of introducing online education for next year. We kind of weighed it out against how it would work with social distancing In the classroom and what would be better for students. We kind of agreed that online was better than social distancing, but we do a lot of group work.

I just got an email alert in my inbox from Queens Center for Progress, an agency that services disabled people (my child is disabled) that they are in need of “meals and Ppe for QCP’s residents and essential workers.”
So yes, some vulnerable people need food and are having trouble getting it.

There are scientists and medical professionals who say there are safe ways to start opening up NOW. Not all of them are brainless quacks.
Yes there are. Those scientists and medical professionals at the CDC came up with a blueprint to reopen. New York is following that blueprint. The fact that the federal government pulled it back and then reissued a watered down version that, by all accounts, paled in comparison due to backlash, doesn't mean New York (or any other state) should also throw it away.
I don't like being home 24/7. I HATE what is going on with my child's education (or lack thereof at this point). I hate that whenever I leave my house I have to wear a mask. I hate that the grocery store I shop at the most has decided there will be no sales, and they jacked up the prices of everything to such and extent Whole Foods looks cheap.
I hate that I can't provide services to my clients the way I have for the past 20 years, and as a result they are getting the short end of the stick - when they are already living in poverty and wondering where their next meal will come from.
The list of things I hate could go on and on, but it's all the same things everyone else hates about this.
But, the thing I would hate more, is to go through all of this, and then open the floodgates, and have to start all over and go through this again. So, if it takes Long Island another two weeks to get to Phase One, and another two weeks to get to phase two, to me that's better than jumping to phase one too early and shutting everything down again in two weeks.

I agree with this. I think my fear is more that we won't enter phase 1 until October/November or later. That is what really terrifies me.
