airline cancellations- refund vs credit
So I was reading somewhere that if your flight is cancelled due to the pandemic the airlines should really be refunding you your money vs. offering a credit. So far everyone I know that has cancelled a flight has been offered a credit. Has anyone here successfully gotten a refund vs. a credit?

airline cancellations- refund vs credit
The difference is between whether the airline cancels the flight, or the passenger cancels the flight. Airline cancellation = refund, passenger cancellation = credit.

This. My flight wasn't cancelled. It still went to Florida. I cancelled so I got a credit. They did extend the credit for longer than it normally would be good due to the pandemic though.

Ok thanks! Just was curious because my mother was supposed to take a flight to Italy around memorial day but obviously now that isn't happening.... she called up the airline (aer lingus- flight had a stopover in ireland) and they said that they would not issue refunds because the flight isn't cancelled... but i thought with travel restrictions that would be the same thing... travel insurance was useless because they say you can't cancel due to fear.

Re: airline cancellations- refund vs credit
I had a Southwest flight in May that was cancelled and they gave me a credit vs refund. I'm wondering if I should call.

If SW cancelled it on you- I'd definitely complain and demand a refund vs a credit.

I'm on hold now. I am annoyed as they sent me a cancellation of flight last week and gave me a credit without giving me an option of refund. I just searched and they are supposed to give you the option of a refund before doing this. The email they sent regarding the cancellation does not state that.
EDITED: Just got off phone and they are refunding. They said you have to call to get a refund.

OK good. In general they are very good. I have had issues with horribly delayed flights and all I had to do was complain on Facebook one time and they gave us $300 credits per person for future use to make it up to us. I had that happen twice already. They generally respond well to complaints on social media if you hadn't gotten anywhere on the phone! Glad they took care of it though.

This is not true. AA canceled our flights to Barcelona. We got refunded. They want you to take the credit, but you do not need to.
I took the credit on Southwest since I use them all the time anyway.
I also got a refund on Iberia Airlines, and one on Delta.

yea i misunderstood when i wrote that. I assumed they meant if you cancel. I was looking into cancelling my flight but they won't do a refund, just a credit. I'm sure if the flight was cancelled i would get the refund, though.
I have a bachelorette in July and we are probably going to be cancelling

I'd wait and see what happens as we get closer to July. The airline may cancel or change your flight making it refund eligible.

This. We just came to terms with the fact that our July Disneyland trip is not happening (I don't want to be there even if they're open) so now just waiting it out to see if Alaska Airlines cancels my flight.
I periodically check random dates in the future and my flight, which normally flies every day, is not flying in May so I'm holding out hope for a cancellation and refund.

Re: airline cancellations- refund vs credit
We had flights booked end of June, one way on American one way on Southwest. I got an email that my southwest flight was changed, completely new flight number. I had read that constitutes a flight cancellation so I called and they are refunding me. Holding out on American flight in hopes they cancel and I can get refund vs. credit.

They just canceled my outgoing flight so I was able to get a refund. They didn't give me a hard time at all.

My American flight was changed to a connecting flight. I reached out for a refund and received one.
