Re: NYC declares Snow Emergency...
An article from the NY Daily News said re: NYC schools: "The mayor warned parents that public schools may close on Wednesday but said the decision won't be made until 5 a.m. He urged parents to call 311 in the morning."

Re: NYC declares Snow Emergency...
There is a Winter Storm Warning in effect for New York City from 7 PM Tuesday, January 11, to 6 PM Wednesday, January 12. Snowfall may reach 8 - 12 inches and wind gusts may reach 15 - 35 MPH. Snow and winds may make travel dangerous, so the public should avoid unnecessary driving during the storm.
this is what it says on their website. how could they say this and possibly keep the schools open??????

Re: NYC declares Snow Emergency...
you do realize that if bloomberg closes the schools, thousands of parents will be SOOL?
it's a HUGE decision and like I said in the other thread, it's ALWAYS ALWAYS been like this.

Re: NYC declares Snow Emergency...
I completely agree with parents being SOOL, but if he declared a snow emergency, then they should not be going anywhere! I also would not want to be on one of the NYC company buses or walking in 9 inches!

generally speaking, 6 inches has always been the deal breaker when closing NYC schools.
it's the number we dreamed of.

I would think so too, yet us city employees get screwed bc we are not allowed to take a snow day...and..my job is clerical, nothing will happen if I miss a day at work due to the snow storm. Only thing would be that I would have to use my own vacation time

And even more so if he closes at 5am leaving parents little time to make arrangements for their kids.

ITA It is crazy to wait. A lot of people have no choice but to go to work and have to make arrangements for their children. How can he possibly say "Snow Emergency" stay indoors if possible, and expect CHILDREN to brave the elements to go to school?
Then again this is the same mayor who hired a person with NO TEACHING EXPERIENCE to run NYC Public Schools. Stupid is as stupid does.
THough I am pretty confident they will close.

Re: NYC declares Snow Emergency...
Of course the safety of the children is paramount HOWEVER there is a HUGE percentage of teachers who teach for the DOE (myself excluded as I work for a private agency) who live on LI and will not be able to make it across city lines safely. If MY child's day care center is closed OH WELL. Im staying home. As a parent, I would NOT want my child on a school bus in this weather.
If schools were to stay open and children did in fact go in, there wouldnt be enough teachers to monitor them and THAT in and of itself is not only a safety risk, but illegal - at least in my school where ratio is law by IEP - a legal document.

Re: NYC declares Snow Emergency...
According to nyc.gov, a "Weather Emergency Declaration" was declared, which is different than declaring a snow emergency.
From the website: Weather Emergency Declaration A Weather Emergency Declaration has been issued at the direction of Mayor Bloomberg. There is a Winter Storm Warning in effect for NYC from 7:00 pm Tuesday, January 11, to 6:00 pm Wednesday, January 12. The public is urged to avoid all unnecessary driving during the duration of the storm and until further directed, and to use public transportation wherever possible. Alternate Side Parking rules & parking meters are suspended until further notice.
Basically, it doesn't mean anything. I'm not sure what they'll decide about the schools tomorrow though

Re: NYC declares Snow Emergency...
he will close....im sure making the public wait is some sort of sick pleasure hes getting. i mean he closed schools last year the day before the storm and the "storm" turned out to be a joke.

This is true- BUT IMO it does not have to continue to be like this. He knows the parents have to deal with child care-even deciding tonight would have made things easier.
I know this will sound like a he-hates-teachers- but it's hard to think anything else when he tells people to stay off the road and then opens the schools. Many teachers, even those like me who use public transit, have to drive.

Re: NYC declares Snow Emergency...
You see, I never understood his thinking. So you wait until early in the morning, when its HARDER for people to call out of work at the last minute. Let parents plan if they need to for child care for their children. Because in the end, those who are going to go to work and dont have child care, will leave their kids at home alone. Give them time to plan.
And I agree with the safety of teachers as well. I also have an issue with schools being treated as babysitting services. I know people work, I know it's hard with scheduling and stuff..but overall, school is school..not somewhere you send your child so you can go to work. Thats just my feeling though.
