Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store

with $25 I would buy nothing but sale items. I would scan supermarket ads for the lowest price on meat/chicken. I would probably get some soup, maybe a little bit of produce like bananas or apples and potatoes and milk and eggs.
you can also find some VERY good prices at Target or Walmart on milk, bread, eggs (staples)
I agree. Lower cost staples such beans, pasta, and items that stretch such as peanut butter, cheese are what my grandparents lived on for years. Meat was a luxury when my dad was growing up.

Some girls on parenting also taught me about taking coupons to the register. I mean sometimes you can get items for free

That totally goes without saying about coupons for sure. My mom doesn't even "need" to use coupons or find sales and she still does. Just used to living a certain way I guess.

DW buys breakfast bars and SlimFast at BJs. Less than a dollar a can for lunch, and less than a dollar a bar for breakfast for me.
(And no, the SlimFast doesn't help me lose any weight.... I make up for it at dinner time...... )

They have programs that help people with lower incomes buy wholesome food. . .and even a website dedicated to weekly menus using that food.
No, it's not organic or vegan, or even kosher, but they are well rounded meals and ANYONE can buy them.

sure, but pepcid is at least 10 bucks and 2 prepared meals are not so cheap either
again, it depends on what you buy

So maybe you can compare just the bertoli dinners and the soda to Applebees but I don't see how the other items compare. Just an observation.

it took me until half way down page two to realize what this thread was about. I've been trying to avoid the political threads but I got tricked by this one.
A few things I thought when I saw that family eating out-it didn't look like healthy food-I don't remember seeing a veggie. The parents were both obese, salad or steamed veggies would be smarter. As someone that raised a child on a shoestring budget for 13 years I think splurging for a meal for 4 out when the family income was cut by 2/3 is foolish. Yesterday I dropped off some things to the consignment shop where I sell stuff I don't need. There was a woman in there that the shop owner knew by name. She was saying how the sherrif is coming because she's getting evicted & she's getting a new place. She was buying $2 & $3 sweaters for her kids. I was feeling really bad for her, until she walked by me & STUNK like cigarettes.
Everyone has choices, excellence is NOT for everyone. Some people will dig their way out of a bad situation, some will enjoy the free ride.
I am right there with you. You CAN get by on very little. Dollar Tree, shopping with double coupons, etc. It's how you spend it and what you spend it on that matters. I am with you that dinner out for four when you don't have the means is excessive. This is how the economy got to where it was..always looking for the reward, saying it's "OK" to splurge.

true, but for the record. The pepcid (30 in a box) will last me 2 weeks. The Cascade, 2 weeks. It was the small bottle until I go to BJ's and the coffee...A few weeks. Not in this house. Im lucky to get a full week.
My point was it is still cheaper for DH and I to go out and eat, unless I make Rice and pasta all the time.

The only thing is- you wouldn't be buying Pepcid at Applebee's if you went for dinner- so technically you'd have to subtract what that cost from the the total and then see if it's still cheaper to eat out... It still could be of course...

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
I used to go to the Grocery Store and spend money like crazy too. Now, I shop for myself, DH and our 2 stepchildren as well as occasional dinners with friends and family.
I've found that it not only depends what you buy but also where you shop. For instance, if I go to Stop and Shop...I pick up Milk, Oranges, Creamer for my coffee, Coffee, Zucchini, Salad, Cheese, Potatos. I easily walk out of there spending $50!!
I've learned that if I go to the local farmer's market, I can get ALL of the above and MORE of it for less than $20. The creamer is only $1.99. Milk $2.00. Oranges 5 for $1.00. Coffee: $2.99. Zucchini: 3 for $2.00. Salad .99 cents. Cheese $3.00. Potatos approx. $2 depending on how much I get.
Stop & Shop, Pathmark, etc. are all very overpriced AND they pack the stores out with so much junk that it's so tempting to overbuy or impulse buy. I have to go there for my meats and certain things but I always look for sales or use coupons.
I've also found that Trader Joe's has amazing prices, just seek out the cheaper items and you have dinner for for the whole WEEK for so cheap.
To argue that you can't make a dinner for $25 for a family of four is insane....c'mon ladies. Buy in bulk, you can buy 2 roaster chickens for $8. Buy a huge back of potatos which will last you more than one dinner, maybe 3 or 4. How much is it for a box of rice and butter???

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
I can't even spend $25 and get stuff to make one dinner from the grocery store its usually around the $30-$35 mark. But we eat healthy. And thats not including meat. I usually have meat in the house that I have bought prior to having to buy the fresh items that day.
Its so sad that the un-healthy choices are so cheap.

It is really hard right now. The cost of food is insane! And it is especially hard if you have a child b/c you want that child to eat well.
Chris and I used to eat for $50 for the WEEK! Now it is $50 for 3 days, MAYBE!!

I'm sorry, but this is incredibly judgmental. I used to work for someone who smoked cigars and I would STINK like smoke and I don't smoke. All of my clothes stunk and I was PREGNANT! I could only imagine what you would think of ME at the time if you saw me someplace.
You don't know everyone's situation.

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
getting back to the topic at hand....it seems we spend about $80 dollars and walk out with half gallon of milk and 1/2 pound each of turkey, swiss and american cheeses.
So no, $25 dollars does not go far, either as a carnivore or vegan.

Where do you shop? Remind me never to go there b/c I can't see any way those items, in the amts you list, cost $80. You must be buying way more than that to spend $80.

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
If I had $25 to spend I would get the following:
Shadybrook Farms Ground Turkey Meat (usually $2.99)
Sausage (usually sale $3)
Two boxes of Pasta (sale $2)
2 jars sauce (Sale $2)
Loaf of bread $2.50
Carton of Eggs (Stop & Shop Brand $2.19)
Couple of boxes of Stop & Shop brand Frozen veggies ($1 each)
2 Cans of tuna on sale $1 each
3 bananas $1
Couple cans of soup $4
Mac N Cheese $1
Not the healthiest options - but that's 8 or 9 meals for 2 easily

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
I just got back from Stop & Shop - I spent $35 and bought the following:
1 prepared rotisserie chicken 2 bottles of juice 2 cans of Pringles milk Yoplait yogurt (2) whole wheat bread whole wheat English muffins 2 bags of Halloween candy cookies 2 boxes of Barilla pasta bananas bread crumbs
it was a light week - didn't need much, but that's a lot IMO for $35 and change.

ok, I was exaggerating. We buymore then those few things. But even when we only buy those few items, I feel like its close to $80 dollars, not that it's really $80 dollars.

fyi - we went to stop and shop today and spent over $166. that includes one giant can of baby formula and various jars of baby food.
It was the most we have ever spent since we are in the house.

I can't even remember the last time I ever only spent $25 in a grocery store. Hec, a gallon of milk is almost $5 alone. Even if I'm running in for "just a couple of things" I'm good for at least $50.
A gallon of organic milk is $7.50
I know its a lot, and it's my choice to put organic milk in my toddler's body, but I can not in good faith give him anything else. It's a shame because they give milk for "free" at daycare (along with the hefty monthly fee) so its a huge chunk out of us. He gets an occasional cup when he wants more than what I sent. It's so hard.
if you're in nassau, maybe try going to fairway. I am fairly sure a 1/2 gallon of fairway brand organic milk is still $3. At least it was a couple months ago (I am embarrassed to say I don't look at prices while food shopping ) they also have a lot of veggie options at more reasonable prices than standard markets.
What I hate about standard supermarkets is that they treat organic and vegetarian options as if their precious and sacred objects (and then double the price!)... at fairway they're still pricy, but the edge is taken off a bit
