DH and I have a kosher home. As far as kosher meat and cheese goes, $25 buys next to nothing! It is more than double the price of non-kosher products.
I have cut back a lot lately on buying meat, and have been trying to come up with more dairy options. Any vegetarians with good ideas, feel free to FM me!
When I do buy meat, I find myself buying cheaper cuts than I would like.
It's not easy at all...
ever hear of quinoa? ITs a high protein grain. It's more expensive than ricw, but a box of t is maybe 3-4 bucks, and it lasts us alllll week!!!!
There are so many things you can do with it! is it high in fiber as well?
You know, you may have helped me solve that whole toilet paper dilemma I was talking about....

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
We love soups, so usually on a sunday, I will make a big pot of soup, and that will usually get us 2 or 3 dinners or lunches.
Liza, maybe you can make a big batch of vegetable soup, that may help to stretch your dollar a little bit. We have found that adding cabbage to soup, for some reason makes us feel full quicker. Maybe your son would also enjoy it.

$25 bucks won't get you very far, but come on, people can get by on less that what they buy now.
I grocery shop for DH and I, mostly at whole foods and trader joes, for breakfast, lunch and dinner and spend 60- 80 dollars a week.
People don;t plan meals, they impulse buy. They buy prepared foods instead of making things themselves. I really think what people consider a neccesary amount of money for food is outrageous
I agree with this!
I have family members that are barely making their mortgage
but eat steaks on the regular

We do that! DH loves making soup.
Cailen is going through a major picky phase. Its frustrating but I can't force him to eat. Luckily he loves rice and noodles!!! Sadly, we buy brown rice and whole wheat noodles, which are more expensive.

My DH (FH at the time) has a serious venti Chai addiction, but was a grad student and could barely pay his rent.
Hi kicked his Starbucks habit real quick when I told him he was spending 1300 dollars a year on Starbucks, enough for a month of rent.

I'm guilty of this - BUT - I am friends with the baristas, who usually give me free coffee

I'm a fellow addict (Venti Chai too). I'm ok with spending the money on it because for me it's a luxury I can afford.

I would try that but I need to grab my cup & go...no time to befriend anyone. Well, except the customer on line behind me who always knows my order.

There was a time, in the first few years I was on my own (over 10 years ago) when I could buy a week's groceries for myself with $25.

I can't even remember the last time I ever only spent $25 in a grocery store. Hec, a gallon of milk is almost $5 alone. Even if I'm running in for "just a couple of things" I'm good for at least $50.
A gallon of organic milk is $7.50
I know its a lot, and it's my choice to put organic milk in my toddler's body, but I can not in good faith give him anything else. It's a shame because they give milk for "free" at daycare (along with the hefty monthly fee) so its a huge chunk out of us. He gets an occasional cup when he wants more than what I sent. It's so hard.
what??????????
I pay 4.75 for organic grassfed non-homegenized milk...7.00 is awfully high!!!!!!!!!! omg. we also go through 3/4 of one a day

ITA I know people who are supposedly struggling but they refuse to eat leftovers. They THROW them out. Yes, right in the garbage. Wonder why they are broke? And they buy premade coffee or hot chocolate everyday, instead of making it themselves. Etc etc...

thanks, i appreciate it i didnt say anything negative about Obama and STILL got my throat ripped out - oh well i chuckle
and that was my whole point! you can buy a box of swiss miss for 2.99 and bring it to work or make it at home These are ways that I cut back. I buy a box of tea bags and keep them at my desk - Sure, I'd rather have someone make it for me but it adds up to about $50 a month at Dunkin' Donuts and I'd rather spend it on something else I was not saying that i begrudge the man and his family a meal, I was saying that if and when struggling; be money wise.

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
Now I may be the biggest spender of all. I can't walk out of the grocery store for less than $50 usually, but that is my choice. I buy steaks and treats for my dogs and the brand name cereal. Now if I absolutely HAD to I could spend less so I see both sides. I guess I am a flip-flopper

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
it took me until half way down page two to realize what this thread was about. I've been trying to avoid the political threads but I got tricked by this one.
A few things I thought when I saw that family eating out-it didn't look like healthy food-I don't remember seeing a veggie. The parents were both obese, salad or steamed veggies would be smarter. As someone that raised a child on a shoestring budget for 13 years I think splurging for a meal for 4 out when the family income was cut by 2/3 is foolish. Yesterday I dropped off some things to the consignment shop where I sell stuff I don't need. There was a woman in there that the shop owner knew by name. She was saying how the sherrif is coming because she's getting evicted & she's getting a new place. She was buying $2 & $3 sweaters for her kids. I was feeling really bad for her, until she walked by me & STUNK like cigarettes.
Everyone has choices, excellence is NOT for everyone. Some people will dig their way out of a bad situation, some will enjoy the free ride.

The Starbucks factor? Don't even go there. I have a severe addiction. It makes me sick that the amount of money I spent there the past several years probably could have bought a trip to Hawaii or a small car.

Liza, where do you buy that? At the supermarket or specialty store?
It used to only be at health food stores, but now you can find it in most natural sections at grocery stores.
It has a nutty taste, but you definitely need to make it with something.... Google quinoa recipes, you will get a bunch!
ETA - I will talk to DH, since he does most of the cooking, for some recipes - and I'll post them on the food forum sometime this week, since may of you asked me about recipes....
I've bought Quinoa in the natural foods section of waldbaums. The one I got was in a blue-ish box.

I did that when I lived on my own too. I don't even think I spent that much. I literally lived on cans of tuna fish, jar sauce, and pasta.
But now, $25 gets me nowhere with 6 people and a dog.

Re: 25 bucks at the grocery store
with $25 I would buy nothing but sale items. I would scan supermarket ads for the lowest price on meat/chicken. I would probably get some soup, maybe a little bit of produce like bananas or apples and potatoes and milk and eggs.
you can also find some VERY good prices at Target or Walmart on milk, bread, eggs (staples)
