I don't know the answers to your questsions but when we were losing our insurance coverage my dentist's assistant (who I'm friendly with) mentioned to me that they are participaing w/ either Cigna or Aetna (though I think it was Cigna) in what's called a discount dental plan.
Maybe type it in and sign up for it. From what I recall it was reasonable and it should give you discount. Otherwise call your dentist's office and flat out tell them you're currently w/o insurance and will they give you discounted rates. HTH! Feel better! Chat Icon

You may want to check with Stony Brook hospital/medical center. I know my friend did and had her tooth pulled by a dental student. They charge a reduced fee and they may also be able to provide other services.

My DH had a tooth pulled at Stony Brook dental school. I believe it was $100.

we have a very low cost dental plan

$150 for both of us for the year and then you get 50% off at the dentist

my DH is saving a ton of money

it's even better then the dental insurace I had from my old job

if you have a lot of filling, you'll probably need a crown...
it's about 700-800 upwards of 1000 depending on the dentist

Re: please read if you have had dental work done without coverage

I don't have any answers as to how much the work would cost, but I can tell you that over a year ago my molar broke.

About a quarter of my back molar broke while eating a sugar daddy (that'll teach me!)

Anyway, my dentist just keeps patching the tooth. There is no cavity, no nerve exposed and I am in no pain. So she chooses to go the more conservative route before having to do a crown.

So if you go to the dentist, they may not have to do much to it if you have the same situation I have.

Paying a monthly fee may end up saving you more $$ than it'd cost you to just get it done w/o insurance. Chat Icon

I'm in the dental field, it sounds like the best treatment would be a crown but a larger filling might be ok for the short term.
Most LI dental offices charge over $1000 for a crown. If you can get away with a large filling that will probably be about $300.
The key is to use a dentist that will do the right thing so you don't have further problems.
FM me if you have specific questions!

wow thanks!

really stupid question - whats a crown and why do they put that on the tooth? AND does insurance usually cover that? i'm hoping the dentist can just patch it up until my ins kicks in and then do the real work when i have ins!!
