question for teachers...honest thoughts wanted

Background: I have 5 years of elementary teaching experience, but I have been home with my kids for 4 years now.

If you were having trouble finding a job, would you take a Para position? I just found one, it actually pays decent plus has full benefits. It will pain me to take a step down...however, this may be a way I can get my foot in the door... Thoughts?

added benefit: no planning, plus the school is near my house.

I applied, but I am scared that they might actually call. LOL.

I would take it. ElemEd jobs are few and far between, and the para position might be a great way to get your foot in the door with a district. GL!!

Definitely! it is a good way to get your foot in the door to a school, and it is a good way to get yourself working with students again without being thrown back in. Next year or even mid way your district may have a position open.

I would take it. It's steady pay where as subbing is just that, subbing.. I agree with the PP that it is a great way to get your foot in the door at a new district. GL!

if you were talking about NYC I'd say no way but on the island it is different so I say yes I'd do it. You'll get your foot in plus it sounds convenient for you right now.

see, i disagree... paras in the city make about $18.00 an hour or more... on LI, they are lucky if they make $10.00 an hour.

if it was a NYC school, i would take the para job (also earning time in NYC-TRS), if it was a LI, i would take a teaching assistant position before a para, or i would get on a bunch of sub lists.

I would sub over taking a para position. I think you are more likely to get noticed and hired as a sub than a para. JMHO

I would definitely take the para position over subbing. I like to know what my day is going to consist of. Subbing was great in that I could take a day off whenever I needed to--but if the pay is decent and has full benefits, I would definitely go for it!

At this point and the way the economy is, I would definitely take it.

Me too. I think being there daily will give you a better chance to prove yourself as opposed to being a sub who's there randomly.

i agree. especially if you could find a permanent sub job--so many of our permanent subs get permanent jobs whereas i've never seen a para get one (in my district). our paras are barely noticed by administration and are definitely not considered the way subs are. but every district is different.

however, if you need the money, i would take anything you can get for now!

I think you are in CT?

I'm not sure if CT retirement is the same as NY, but subbing in NY goes towards your retirement.

If you take the para position, you are covered under another plan, but I think you can combine them when you get a teaching job.

Either option (subbing or para) is a good way to get noticed in a school district. Why not go into the interview, looking to see if it's a good fit for you.

I disagree! I would take a TA position over a para position anyday! I say this as a former LI TA and a current NYC teacher (a CTT teacher who has had paras)

Paras in NYC are treated as basic aides. As much as I personally treat my para as an equal i dont see that by administration. If you are a certified teacher and you enjoy being a teacher and want to teach Para is not for you. Paras in NYC are not required to be certifide therefore they are not expected to do much as far as educating students.

I worked as a TA in 2 different districts. TAs were required to be certified. You were utilized as a teacher. I taught MY OWN guided reading groups/ math groups/ able to teach after school programs as well as assist and be there for the students. It was much more rewarding and I was busy. You would have to look around some schools dont pay well but one school that I was in started at over 30,000 with full benefits and i made extra money working clubs and after school programs. If you want to eventually get back into teaching TA is the way to go.

Thanks everyone. I do live in CT (good memory Erica!) so things are a little different here. They never called me for an interview, but that's okay... I did feel really overqualified anyway. Chat Icon
