Being sick and going back to school...thoughts?

Ella awoke with a fever Monday morning. It was 101/102 and got as high as 104 throughout the day. She was generally in good spirits & energetic except when the fever spiked. She went downhill in the evening.

Same thing today. She woke up happy & animated (thermometer read 99/100) and was great until 4-5pm when she plummeted and napped all afternoon (fever went up to 103).

Earlier in the day, I was considering sending her to school tomorrow since she was feeling so much better (pre-school - she's 4 next week). I'm fairly certain she'll wake up tomorrow and be good to go, but I can't guarantee that she won't fail again in the afternoon so I'll play it safe and keep her home.

Just wondering - does the 24hrs fever free thing apply to school? How do you know when to send them back?

I know in my sons pre-k the 24hr rule goes. The teacher made it known in the beginning, not saying everyone follows it. As for my ped he also feels very strong about children being fever free for 24hrs before being around other children. Hope your dc is feeling better Chat Icon

Our elementary school has a 24hr fever free policy. I think it is the right thing.

24 hr fever free is what my preschool says....pretty much for that exact reason - fevers often go up high later in day/evening - meaning illness/infection is still present and therefore contagious or so I understand it to be. Stinks she is sick at the end of the school year.

I hope she feels better soon! Chat Icon

Andrew went through something similar. He was sick one day as he got out of school, so the nurse called to tell me that I should keep him home for 24 hours even if he felt better. Thing was, he did feel fine the next day and could have gone to school.... had his one and only absence that day Chat Icon

I think Kim uses the 24 hour rule. I usually abide by it just because I'm used to it and it's routine for me.
BUT as you know I use preschool as a "daycare" while I'm at work, so sometimes I am soooooooooooooo tempted to send him in because I know he's fine and *I* don't want to burn a sick day!!Chat Icon

Bleh, I think she's going to miss this whole week - I was supposed to be the mystery reader tomorrow Chat Icon

I agree with the 24hr rule, and she still has a fever today. I guess I should be glad it happened this week and not next so she can make it to all the year-end festivities and her birthday party.

Thanks. The DD by me won't do it, so I'll call them next week.
