Need help with child that does not listen (older child)

We have specifically told our 11, almost 12 year old that she is NOT allowed to use the stove and oven when we are not home. Last week she waited until I came home even after trying to beg over and over.
Well today I come home to a house that is about 150 degrees (no air on, no windows open) and a hot oven. She decided on her own to make cookies even after we have told her a thousand times she is not allowed to.
I am livid and do not know what else to do but to take away almost all of her priveledges.
What do I do with a child who just does whatever they want, when they want?
She has ADHD and will tell me she doesn't know WHY she does these things. I have spoken to her dr. about things like writing on walls, furniture, impulsive things and he tells me it is normal for an ADHD child.
What do I do? Take her to a dr? How would that help if something in her brain is telling her to just do it?

Is she staying home alone? I would get a babysitter. I know it's an expense...but maybe at 12 she will realize that she has a babysitter because she doesn't listen, and that will make her listen (to get rid of having the sitter) Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks. Not sure WHAT will work with this child as my other child is soooo different. Of course he tries to get away with things like any other kid but I can tell him once and he will listen.

Is she medicated?

My son has ADD (I know it's different than ADHD), but he has issues with impulsivity. I have to say he struggled for a long time but has really made a turn around these past 2 years.

At 12 years old, she knows the rules to be followed. If she can't be trusted alone, unfortunately you have to make arrangements for someone to watch her (even if it's a high school student). When I was 16, I watched a family with a 12, 8 & 5 year old.

Agreed... I would stop leaving her home unattended.

Yes, she is medicated but it only lasts about 10 hours so by dinnertime, it is done.

As far as using the stove... is it one of the ovens where you can take the knobs off? We had to do that when my babysitting MIL would leave the burners on...we hid the knobs when she came over.

I was never allowed to use the stove. at 12 I used it to make pudding, of course my mom came home early and had a FIT! I was punished for making pudding , to this day I still complain to her about it.

this doesn't help you I'm sure , but it's hard to not use the stove if you are home. you need to get a sitter
