Unexplained miscarriage?

After going through a ton of testing there seems to be no found reason of why I had a miscarriage.

My mid luteal progesterone was 23.6 last cycle. My OB says that is a good number. The Peri said he'd ike to see 26 or higher but 23.6 is good and its not likely that I have a luteal phase defect.

Blood testing (for immune/clotting disorders) came back normal for the most part. The Peri looked over my results and said I'm fine. I also saw a Hematologist since my OB requested that I speak with one to be sure since my bloodwork did have some abnormality. The Hematologist said my numbers are fine but he is running the tests again to appease my OB.

The genetic testing came back normal. It could be inconclusive though because it came back as a normal female baby and there is always the chance the lab grew my cells.

Not having an idea why it happened sucks. I'm scared it will happen again but we are trying and hoping for the best because that is all we can do.

I know lots of people have a miscarriage and don't do any testing and then get pregnant again and things are fine.

Is there anyone here who doesn't know why they miscarried and is trying again? Or tried again and had a successful pregnancy?

We are trying now and I'm having mid luteal progesterone testing done this cycle again. Both the Peri and OB want to know the level the cycle I get pregnant.

Thanks for listening to me vent.Chat Icon

I think most miscarriages are "unexplained"...unless you have a real medical reason for it to have happened. A lot of chemical ones happen, no reason other than your body detected something wrong.

I think that most are not explained because people don't always look for an answer. All of the doctors I've seen throughout this ordeal say the most common reason is a chromosome abnormality. I think they say 70% of 1st trimester miscarriages occur because of that. In my case I'll never be 100% sure whether that was a reason or not.

I just don't understand how a pregnancy stops progressing for no reason. We saw a heartbeat. I had all the symptoms. Obviously something wasn't right for it to just end and I hate not knowing what went wrong.

I feel like I have no closure. I've accepted that it happened but I'll always wonder why. I like facts.

I just pray the next one sticks. Chat Icon

I sorry, that's must be so hard for you Chat Icon I was only 5 weeks, so I really feel like I should be over it by now. I don't know if I could function if I had gone through all that. You're a strong person

Re: Unexplained miscarriage?

I had a missed MC at the 10/11 week mark. I too had a heartbeat and all. Then during a routine dr appt we found out I had a mc and didn't know it.

We did the genetic testing.
It came back with Trisomy 21... which is compatible with life. The actual cause of the mc is unknown.
Sometimes you just don't get all the answers. I know it's hard, but try not to drive yourself nuts looking for them.

I'm currently almost 23 weeks pregnant. Having had a trisomy 21 the last pregnancy had me worried that I was either a carrier or that it would happen again. Another fear of mine is having a missed mc again. but I have to have faith that it won't happen again. So far all is going well and I'm not a carrier. It's still scary... and there have been some hiccups in the road but so far so good.

Sometimes even having the answer is scary in it's own right. And scares you for the next pregnancy, thinking that the same thing will happen again and knowing what that same thing is. Obsessively researching the trisomy and driving yourself nuts over it. The sad sad truth is mc, esp in the first tri, are common and a lot of the time the cause is unknown. IDK why some people are lucky to never ever have to experience it while others do and even still some have to more than once. It's hard when this whole process is so out of your control.

It's like a catch 22. It's hard to not know and hard to know. I think sometimes we just have to take the unfortunate circumstances that have been dealt to us and just go on. It definitely takes a good amount of time to get over a mc for a lot of people. And truthfully I don't think you ever really do... not even when you get the next BFP.

I'm sorry for what you had to experience. If they can't find a reason, please don't drive yourself crazy over it. Just because you have a mc with a cause or without a cause doesn't necessarily mean the same will happen again.

Thank you MrsKs. I feel like you always know what to say.

You are right about knowing vs not knowing. If I knew I'd be driving myself crazy worrying about it happening again and I'd be googling like a maniac. So it is a catch 22. It stinks either way.

it really does stink either way. it's one of those "grass is always greener" things..but really... the grass isn't greener on either side... it's just different.

Good Luck! I hope things work out for you and that you find some sense of "closure" or calm about the incident. IDK how to say it... but I hope the time where the healing process is noticeable comes soon for you.

I had two miscarriages 3 months apart.
Testing done on the second, nothing found conclusive.

I am now a mommy of 2 under 2
