MRI with contrast

What exactly is the contrast? I don't have to worry about being around my kids after, right?

Re: MRI with contrast

I just had one with Gadolineum (sp?). It is not radioactive - no concerns at all I was told. Unless you are pg or bf!

No its not radioactive...it is very safe and a reaction to it is rare but it can happen. Most times a mild reaction would be a headache and you could get hives but its very rare its not like contrast used for CatScan. What tpye of MRI are you having bc alot of Drs oreder contrast and it isnt necessary. Also you need to have blood level checked BUN and Creatinine level before they give you contrast.

It's for a head MRI. I have had several MRI's without contrast but my neurologist wants to do one with contrast.

Why do I need blood levels checked? He never gave me a prescription for blood work Chat Icon

To check your kidney functions. My facility wont inject a patient for any exam without BUN and Creat levels...call the place you are having your MRI and ask them if they need your bloodwork...

Re: MRI with contrast

I just had this and the Dr gave me the script foe the bloodwork but said, they might not make me do it. I went to zwanger and peseri and they did not make me get the bloodwork. Oh and the contrast just gives them a better pictureChat Icon

The MRIs are done in the testing center they have at the neurologists office. I will call tomorrow but I imagine he would have given me a script considering the testing is done is his own office Chat Icon

Re: MRI with contrast

Yes, I had one done recently and needed to provide a copy of recent bloodwork (w/n 3 mos)to show that the kidneys are functioning normally. there is a rare but, very serious disease you can get from the dye if your kidney's are not functioning 100%. That is why they do it.

Re: MRI with contrast

Nope the contrast doesn't have any radioactive stuff in it & it leaves your system fairly fast. They would have you do blood work depending on they type of MRI you are having. Usually its to check the function of your kidneys to make sure that your levels are good. They would never give you contrast is there was an issue with your kidneys.

Re: MRI with contrast

My DH just had a brain MRI recently with contrast. He did not need bloodwork before hand. He said it was nothing, just an IV to run it through.
