Help with insurance and child care leave!! Getting screwed!

What did you guys do as far as medical insurance during your child care leave? Did you do COBRA or go under your DH's plan?

I was told by DH human resources that I couldn't go under his medical b/c I am opting not to choose COBRA...and that COBRA is an option of medical insurance so it does not fall under the loss of coverage for a qualifying event.

This whole thing is so confusing...my GHI is over in 2 days and my child care leave is already approved until sept...what should I do?!!!

I was so ready to stay home with the kids until Sept and now am so depressed that I may have to return to work...I don't even know if I can return to work like this in such short notice...anyone know about this too?

This will make me go into post partum depression really quick!

I never heard of that before, not being able to go under your dh because you could qualify for COBRA. I went under my husband's insurance, while I was on childcare leave and I am still on it, even though I went back to work. Seems a bit odd to me. Have you talked to more than one person? Have you written a letter to appeal their decision?

At one point I had insurance and also had my husbands as my secondary.

I'm on DH's insurance, but when he was laid off 10 years ago, I was immediately able to put him on mine even though he could have received COBRA.


I'm not sure if you can go back on shrot notice. I can't - I need to give 60-90 days depending on what the change is. I'm sure it is different by district.

Thanks everyone for your responses...I got the phone call today that I did qualify to go onto DH's plan! The HR person at his job was wrong! Yayyyyyyy!!,

Really? That's weird... DH's insurance covered DD and I once mine ran out. COBRA was an option for me, but not one that I was ok with. Call his insurance company directly and see if they have bette answers for you.
