Your experiences with Melatonin?

I'm having a really hard time sleeping through the night. I fall asleep and after an hour or two I wake up about every 45-60 minutes.

I can not take Ambien. Benedryl worked a little but I was really draggy for a few hours after I got up and I don't want patients to think I'm hungover or something.

Did Melatonin work--or not-- for you?

Re: Your experiences with Melatonin?

Personally? No, I've never used the stuff.

But I have a good friend who has trouble sleeping often and took melatonin supplements. Said it sucked.

Now he's taking Walsom, gets it at Walgreens, it's OTC. Swears by the stuff.

I'm not sure if size has anything to do with the effectiveness but my friend is 6'8" weighs probably around 220.

Re: Your experiences with Melatonin?

this is my personal experience....

I bought it and it worked for me very, very, well however, I had to stop taking it as after a while I was terribly nauseated in the morning and I ascertained it was from the melatonin as I did not take it every night and could pinpoint the times i felt that way...have not felt that way since...it took about 3 months for that side effect to rear its ugly head but I also found out the dosage I was taking (5mg) was very high..I see 1 to 3 mg recommended but I never tried to go with the smaller dose I did not want to chance it...my opinion is to research it before trying it to see if its for you.....

Re: Your experiences with Melatonin?

Melatonin helps me fall asleep, but I never stay asleep. It gives me really vivid dreams and every time I wake up in the middle of the night after taking it, I have a lot of noise in my head.

Chlor-trimeton or anything with chlorpheniramine--another antihistamine, makes me sleep like a baby.

I took it. It never did anything.

The only thing that works is the OTC sleep aids. I dont know what the ingredients are but I think they are similar to benadryl (although the OTC stuff works better for me)

Did you try Lunesta?

No, I haven't tried Lunesta yet. I think I'll go the OTC route and try that one Jennie recommended first.

Thanks for the feedback ladies!

I took 10mg dose when I was TTC (was supposed to help with egg quality) and always slept great when I took it. Normally I am a poor sleeper. Maybe try the higher dose? Oh and I get knocked up too so be careful, LOL

It definitely worked for me. I took 3 mg w/in 1/2 hour or so of going to bed and usually always slept very well. I started by taking 5 mg, but my dreams were too vivid and too wild, so I went w/a lower dose.

I have also taken Benadryl/Simply Sleep, but like you said, it can make you very groggy the next day. If I know I have to sleep, that's what I'll take. I just try to take it as early as possible so that the grogginess has worn off by the next morning.
