Feeling very overwhelmed right now --- cancer related

I am so overwhelmed and don't know where to go to get more information.

Our family has been so devistated by cancer.

My brother in law passed away about 2 years ago from esophageal cancer.

My Dad passed away just a week and a half ago from cancer.

My sister Denise, the wife of my brother in law who passed, who is 41, was just diagnosed with Breast Cancer 3 months ago.

About a month ago she had a double hysterectomy and also removed lymphnodes. Pathology showed that cancer was in both breasts and 5 out of the 11 lymphnodes on the left side.

She has gotten a port put in and will be going through both chemo and radiation therapies.

She saw her breast surgeon this afternoon, the first doctor that she started seeing out of a slew of doctors, and they had the results from some kind of genetic testing that they did a month ago.

Apparently the doctor feels as if there is a good chance that she also has ovarian cancer. They need to do more testing.

I am floored. I can't understand how cancer can devistate one family in so many ways and in such a short amount of time.

Aside from that --- I have so many questions.

Is it confirmed, from genetic testing, that she has ovarian cancer or she is just at risk?

Also she told my Mom that we all need to go and get the genetic testing also, because it is hereditary.

I guess I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this that they can share with me. Right now she would have the most answers since she was at the doctor's today, but she is in no shape to be taking phone calls right now. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So sorry to hear all of this. Prayers for you and your family.

From what i know about the genetic testing it only tells you you are at risk for breast and ovarian cancer, not that you have it.

My mother is a breast ca survivor as is my aunt. I got tested and it came back negative. If it was positive, i would have had to consider elective mastectomy and oopherectomy(ovary removal)

Again prayers for allChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This is just so awful. My heart goes out to you and your family. I would absolutely get tested if I were you. That is a lot to take in, but it might save your life and your daughter's.

Cancer is so overwhelming.... I wish you & your family didn't have to go thru this...
Your sister was probably tested for the BRCA gene mutation. You and your family should meet with a genetics counselor and consider being tested.
If your sister tested positive for the BRCA gene mutation doesn't mean she has ovarian cancer however she is at increase risk.
She should have had more tests to detect ovarian cancer.
I wish your family well....

This. Testing positive for the BRAC gene only means that her life time risk for ovarian cancer is much higher than the average women. The good news is this risk can be almost completely removed if she has surgery to have her ovaries taken out.

Ohh! So sorry to hear all these! This Cancer is so bad. As above posters said, the genetic testing only detects the risk involved & not that you have cancer or not. Surely get yourself and other family members checked. My prayers go out to you and your family.
