Being unreasonable?

DH tells me his sister wants to host New Year's Eve this year. She lives out of state (within driving distance)

I tell him thats great but I want to stay at a hotel not at her place. He tells me that I can go spend the holiday with my family then........

His sister lives in a 2 bedroom apt with her husband, 2 young sons (under 5) and 2 large dogs. His parents would also be coming with us, which would mean that we would be sleeping in the living room. The last time we all stayed together, we ended up being woken up at 6am to her loud kids being entertained in the living room (where we slept) by the grandparents so his sister and her husband could "sleep in"

I love my nephews to death, but its my day off too and I want to enjoy my holiday and be able to sleep in if I want to. I dont think I'm being unreasonable for trying to compromise by getting a hotel room. DH thinks that because we stay at my parent's house all the time (we stay in a spare room), then we should be able to stay at his family's.

Thoughts?

Re: Being unreasonable?

His reason for wanting to stay at his sister's place makes no sense to me. Does he like being woken up by kids & dogs & people making noise first thing in the morning?

Re: Being unreasonable?

I don't think that you're being unreasonable at all! You should be able to relax on your day off.

As much as I love my family, I need space and privacy when I sleep.

Re: Being unreasonable?

Your husband is insane. It's not like staying over at Christmas where you might want to be there first thing in the morning to see everyone open presents.

In that situation I'd tell him to stay at his sister's while you stay at a hotel and enjoy sleeping in Chat Icon

Re: Being unreasonable?

If its going to cost an inordinant amout of money i can kind of see that being a valid reason; but if its not about money at all then i don't get him. Thats way too close for comfort to me, its different if you have your own room.

I wouldnt want to stay there.

I have a good friend out of state who want us to come stay with them, they have 4 kids, and we'd be in our own room and i always make up an excuse! We just cant deal.

I agree.

In light of the fact that you won't have your own room or a place to stay that won't be out of the way, I don't think you're being unreasonable.

And yes, this thread started out on the relationships board but for some reason was moved.

Re: Being unreasonable?

I have a child and I wouldn't want to stay with your SIL either. Too many people, 2 dogs who are not used to me, too much going on. If she had a guest room, maybe, but not if I have to crash on the LR couch. My couch days are now behind me.

My DS is up at 6am every.single.day. I tell visitors that they are welcome at my house anytime, but we are up early in our house and it's hard for me to keep a 3 year old quiet. I love having guests but would totally understand if they want to stay at a hotel. Sometimes *I* want to stay at a hotel and I live there. Chat Icon

Re: Being unreasonable?

Whenever we go see BIL & SIL we stay in a hotel for this reason, they have a baby and are early risers, DH and I are not. We stay up late and since our schedules are totally conflicting it completely makes the most sense. If it were Christmas I could see wanting to be there first thing in the morning to see the kids open their gifts but this is totally different.
