Puppy teething help
Our 27lb St. Bernard puppy is going to be 12 weeks on Tuesday....and the main problem we have is the nipping & chewing. Any suggestions ??
She sleeps through the night in her crate from 11:00pm - 5:30am and we leave her in big room during the day. She's pretty good with the potty training & loves the leash....it's just the biting.
DH takes her out at 5:30am then plays/hangs-out with her for an hour including a walk, then she goes out again in the yard quick before I leave at 8am, I have a walker come in around 10am to give her water & to play with her, then I go home for lunch around 1pm for a quick walk and to have water/eat and then I'm back home again at 5:30pm. When we go quick in the yard, come in to eat/water then go for a good 30 minute walk. So I think she has a good routine going & hopefully enough exercise ?
After all this she still becomes crazy at night !! Just keeps coming after you to bite ! She hates the bitter apple spray but I can't dip my whole body in it lol I try yelping & she continues, I'll leave the room for 30 seconds and she'll attack me as soon as I come back. She has a bunch of toys she likes to chew but she'll literally be chewing the toy then get up & come over to bite us. I guess she gets bored ?
Everyone says it will stop eventually but it's just frustrating....

Re: Puppy teething help
The only thing that worked for us was a spray bottle. I don't even have to spray him anymore, all I have to do is touch the bottle and he cowers. He still chews but is not a big biter anymore. Of course he'll be 1 next week so I hope the chewing stops one day!

Re: Puppy teething help
We tried the water bottle but she stops for a second then comes right back at us.
Different people have told us to try a can of coins because clapping or yelping or some sort of "Ehh Ehh" sound doesn't work. The breeder told us St. Bernards don't startle much so that could be why that doesn't stop her. :(

Re: Puppy teething help
My pit was very mouthy when we got her, too. It took a lot of ignoring her to get her to stop. As soon as she'd put her mouth on anybody we'd stop, tell her "NO!" and turn away and ignore her. She wouldn't get any attention again until she sat quietly. Now she never does that and even if we're rough housing, which we do a lot, if she puts her mouth on my skin I yelp and she stops and sits. It's amazing. But it took a long time, about a year of this, to get there. I can't tell you how many arguements DH and I had about getting rid of her, but I knew she would grow up and out of it and she did. I know it's hard to say hang in there, but they do grow out of it. Just make sure you're persistent.

Re: Puppy teething help
Thanks !
That's good to hear because we're trying to do everything according to the "rules" and people say she'll grow out of it......but we just get frustrated and nervous that we'll have this giant unruly dog when she grows up.
So I guess consistency & time is the key....
