I need to vent. Overwhelmed.

I hate the NYC DOE.

There. I said it.

I can't take it anymore. I bust my freaking butt 24/7. I come in at 7 am - and I leave (on average) between 5-7pm everyday, although I left today at 8 pm.

I am the testing coordinator for the school.
I am the data specialist for the school.
I am the grade team leader.
I am in a highly tested subject area.
I am a mentor.
I am chair of SLT.
I run a club after school and one during my lunch period.
I teach 25 periods AND on some days teach 4 in a row (or 6 in one day).

Andddddddddddd... I just got ripped a new one for not wanting to do tutoring after school and not wanting to do Saturday program.

When is it ever enough?! I sacrifice SO MUCH time outside of school and yet if I "want to grow professionally and hold a leadership position" it was recommended that I should do tutoring.

And my principal actually had the nerve to say to me - jokingly - however I was SO offended by it: "See, look what happens! You got tenure and now you're slacking."

I'm not looking for sympathy or an atta-girl. I KNOW I bust my butt on a daily basis. But with us under attack 24-7 and NOT getting support from admin, or parents, or the city, what's the incentive? Why do I keep doing this job? I love my kids - but is that enough anymore?!

WHY do they think people leave this profession?! I am so frustrated, upset, and exhausted.

I'm sorry - I just need Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon andChat Icon

Re: I need to vent. Overwhelmed.

It sounds like you are way overextending yourself to be part of the school community..I cannot believe they are not commending you and you hit the nail on the head...this is why people leave the profession..I took an admin. class where the teacher (a supt.) said he understood that at different phases of a teacher's life, he expected different forms of involvement..single people vs. newer parents vs. more experienced parents/parents with kids in college, etc. He knew they were getting work done and doing the best they could...I don't see the witch hunt for teachers ending anytime soon Chat Icon I hope you feel better!

All I can say is, scale back the extras. Give up SLT etc.

I hate to say this but in my experience, the more you do, the more (most) admins give / expect you to do, and the less they appreciate you.

ITA with this. It's lose-lose. I'd be furious about that tenure comment even if it was in jest.

In my school, testing coordinator, data specialist and SLT chair are three different people. And none of those people lead grade teams.

I have been with the DOE for 16 years, and I have scaled way back. My immediate admins are fine but I have dealt with too many people who get a little power and think they can crap all over you. I don't know if that exists in other organizations but the DOE has it in spades.

I plan to leave at the end of this school year. I'm completely fed up and I know where you're coming from. Chat Icon Chat Icon Take care of yourself- they will not consider your needs so you have to take charge.

I do not work for the DOE, but I think you need to re-evaluate your time commitment to the school. You need free time. I spend a lot of time doing work in and out of school, going to plays, sporting events, etc. Then I realized, I am one of the few people not relaxing/enjoying weekends since I was so overwhelmed with work. I now set aside maybe 1-2 hours over the weekend MAX to do schoolwork. Everyone needs downtime and I think it is ridiculous your admin is being so unreasonable - guilting you into doing even more when you are putting in 12 hour days.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone out there.

I have decided to bow out of SLT and I am holding firm on not doing more after-school activities.

Bonnie - I swear not 3 weeks ago I was asking posters that I am friends with IRL if they have heard from you bc you haven't posted in so long. Now I know why.

Follow the other's advice...you have to scale back. It's too much. You're going to burnout and resent and then hate your job. You've only been teaching a few years. Trust me, they will find someone else to fill in for you. They always do. I do many of your jobs and I have declined many of the ones you didn't. You need a life. And the DOE will not step in and point that out.

And honestly, I will BURN for saying this but....if you say no, it's not like you can get fired.

You are a great teacher, going above and beyond. They're lucky to have you. You must be handling all those roles with such grace that they think they can get more out of you. Just because you work hard and make it look easy doesn't mean they can take advantage of you, though. Keep strong! If you don't have time for a family life you will resent the job and you'll resent the kids. I was there. And I quit. I'm still teaching, but not for the DOE anymore. I just couldn't do it.
