Anyone have TMJ?
I've had mild clicking since my teen years & braces. BUT not it's getting worse. Even more after my last wisdom teeth were removed.
It's gotten to the point of pain & the other weekend I could barely open my mouth (had to eat a hamburger with TINY fork bites)
I don't chew gum, smoke, not many hard or big sandwiches.
What treatment do you do to relieve. cause it's getting more & more frequent & painful.

Re: Anyone have TMJ?
I do. I got it after I got braces at 21. I saw a dr and he gave me a mouth guard for when I sleep, didn't work for me, made me gag. I was then given muscle relaxers. Worked, but people thought i was high all the time. All i can say is avoid hard candy. That killed me. For me, the best relief i got was putting pressure on the area where my chin meets my neck. My ex was a chiropractor and taught me that trick. It hurts for a few seconds, but then releases the pain. Works every time, you just have to play around and find that "sweet spot" where the release comes from. Like i said, for me, it is at the base of my ear, where my chin is. Feel around when you have an episode and if it is sore, that is the spot. Apply pressure for a minute and release, and that should do the trick.

Re: Anyone have TMJ?
Go to your dentist and let him check everything. And make sure you get a gelb appliance. It is smaller and way better than a full appliance. And see if your healthinsurance will pay for it, often they do, but not many people know about it.

My dentist did recommend a guard....I wonder if it's a gelb. Is that kinda like the newer type retainers? (I had the old school wire & pink roof of the mouth kind).
When I first mentioned it to my dentist it wasn't that bad....now its getting to bad. I had to give up sushi one night, because I couldn't even open enough for it

No offense to anyone who likes them...I'm not a fan of using them.
Anyone find massages work? I heard about a place by me who does cold stone TMJ massages.

Re: Anyone have TMJ?
Ive had a PT work on my jaw for TMJ, it really helped. Also, acupuncture points helped, especially the one right on the jaw.

I'm no fan of chiro's either, my mom is a nurse and told me some things, but like I said, my ex was one and he knew the exact spot to penetrate when I had an episode, it might not hurt to see one and have them find that spot and show you have to apply pressure and it will be gone in 2 minutes.

Gothchya! I just don't like that they don't actually treat your aliment to make it health; it's temporary.
I'm hoping for something to make it stop getting stressed & inflamed.

Re: Anyone have TMJ?
I have TMJ disorder. I use a mouthguard It's a small clear plastic thingthat goes over my bottom teeth, no huge appliance, no big deal. it does help. I also take muscle relaxers before bed for a number of reasons. I have found that chiropractic does help. I really like my chiropractor because he really is about total health, but that's up to you. I think anything you can do to release stress in that area and in general can help, including massage. Some people use cold and hot packs as well
