these are both females
male dog ticks are smaller and look different
you can't see it in this picture...but above the head are the 'stingers' that's the part that 'bites' and transmits disease
female dog ticks only engorg..male ticks do not!

Ack. When I found the tick on my DDs scalp (walking around, UGHHHH), it was as small as a poppy seed. It appeared to be a female deer tick to me.
